Frequently Asked Questions...

Whats the difference between a normal ultrasound, 3D ultrasound and 4D ultrasound baby scan?
A normal ultrasound scan is generally imaged in black and white, across a two dimensional plan giving you a 'side on' view of your baby.

A 3D ultrasound image is snapshot in three dimensions showing facial contouring, arms, fingers, toes and more.

A 4D ultrasound scan combines the imagery of a 3D scan, but adds a time element (the 4th dimension), allowing you to see realtime movement in the form of arms stretching, head moving and the legs kicking. This can provided on a DVD for you to take home and is included with some of our scanning packages
.
Can I bring other members of my family to watch the 4D scan?
Yes, you are welcome to bring partners, parents, grandparents and friends. Our scanning suite includes a large plasma screen monitor, allowing you to see the images clearly without crowding round a smaller scanning monitor.

How long does the scan take?
The appointment will generally last around 45 minutes, with shorter amount of scanning time. This will allow plenty of time to relax, prepare and then enjoy your scan. Throughout the appointment, we will also check how your baby is doing and do some checks with size, position and development. We may be able to tell the sex if you really want to know!

I know I'm having twins, does that make a difference?
Yes it can. The success of your baby scan will depend on the amount of room your baby has to move around which is why we recommend coming before 33 weeks. If you are having twins you should consider having the 3D scan at around 24 - 28 weeks.

Is a baby scan always successful?
Not always. There are some factors that can affect the success of your baby scan, the most common being the position of your baby but mum's build and a high BMI can also affect the quality of the pictures. If this happens we will ask you to get up, walk about and have a drink to encourage your baby to move. We will then try again but if still unsuccessful it may be necessary to ask you to arrange another appointment (at no extra charge).

Does a 4D hurt, will I feel anything?
A 4D scan doesn't cause any pain to you or your baby. Standard ultrasound scans are used for diagnostics all over the world and 3D / 4D scanning is an evolution of the technology.
