This is one that many people recognise as a common sign of depression but it doesn’t necessarily mean that’s it’s easy to identify at first. Anxiety can manifest itself in many different ways, either physically or mentally. It may be that you spot a lack of confidence in a certain thing that wasn’t there before or an uncertainty that seems to be exaggerated when it need not be.
This may include a lack of memory, difficulty concentrating and in extreme cases confusion to the point where hallucinations occur. When it gets to this extent it isn’t hard to spot, it is, however hard to relate it to depression as it is often mistaken for many other things.
3. Avoiding social contact
Taking part in less and less social activities may be a sign of depression. This could be due to a lack of confidence, or a reduced sense in what you’re doing. The person who is suffering may not feel themselves and therefore will feel disconnected from how they used to feel in similar situations.
Neglecting yourself, or seeing your loved one neglecting what would normally matter to them. It could be that a previous hobby or interest is now ignored, or a loved one is shut out without any outward explanation causing relationships to break down.
5. Absence of motivation
This could appear in many different parts of your life when suffering from depression. On the whole, you may just feel drained and without a sense of purpose. It may be that you don’t feel able to achieve what you had been able to previously, often for no apparent reason.
6. Being more irritable or intolerant
Finding a situation irritable ,that you used to be comfortable with, is a common sign of depression. Again it may be down to a variety of factors that can make you less tolerable and restless but identifying this can be a key to finding the wider issue.
7. Feelings of guilt and worthlessness
A common sign to look out for is making comments about being helpless or worthless, saying statements such as “It would be better if I wasn’t here”.
8. Weight and eating habits
The symptoms of depression can also be physical. Feeling a certain way naturally, affects the way in which you look after yourself. Seeing that you or someone close to you isn’t doing this properly could be a clear sign that they aren’t themselves. This may include overeating or loss of appetite.
9. Absence or lack of libido
A person’s sex drive being lower than usual could again be attributed to a variety of things including a sign of depression. This why it’s important to see depression as something that can trigger a range of symptoms, some different, and some the same depending on the individual.
10. Sleep and fatigue
It may be the case that suffering from depression disturbs your sleep. This could be struggling to fall asleep and insomnia, or waking up much earlier than usual.
