In the UK, there are 3,200 new cases of cervical cancer every year*. Early detection may prevent 75% of cancers from developing, making smear tests a life saving screening.
Despite the importance of smears, Dr Tang at Pall Mall Medical said: “The number of women going for a regular smear screening is at its lowest in 19 years so women must be urged to get checked as early prevention is key”.
Women aged 25 and over are eligible for a smear test on the NHS every 3- 5 years however any women over the age of 18 should book in for a smear test, and not wait for their referral letter, if they experience symptoms such as:
- light bleeding in between periods
- menstrual bleeding that is longer or heavier than usual
- Bleeding after a pelvic examination
- Increased discharge
- Bleeding after menopause
- Pain during intercourse
- Unexplained and persistent back/ pelvic pain
To celebrate Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, 20th – 26th January, Pall Mall Medical want to encourage women to take control of their own health by booking in for a smear test.
