Clinical Experience

Dr Mohammed is the Cardiology Clinical Director and Clinical for Echocardiography and Cardiac Imaging at St Helens and Whiston hospitals and is Senior Cardiologist at Pall Mall Medical both at Manchester and Merseyside sites. He is also an Honorary Consultant in cardiac imaging at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

Dr Mohammed is an established Senior Consultant Cardiologist with extensive experience in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. In addition to general cardiology, he is especially interested in cardiac imaging and providing an accurate assessment for cardiac abnormalities. He is an active member of cardiac imaging professional societies.

Dr Mohammed is renowned for his thorough assessment of cardiac conditions and personalised patient care providing treatment and reassurance with explanations that patients and carers in a way they understand.

Dr Mohammed has long-standing experience with cardiac conditions such as angina, heart attacks, heart failure, valve heart disease and palpitations including atrial fibrillation. He is also experienced with cardiac risk assessment prior to non-cardiac surgery, ‘healthy heart’ checks up for cardiovascular disease screening and primary prevention advice.

Dr Mohammed had all his training, both undergraduate and postgraduate, in the UK at some of the best medical institutions. He studied Medicine at the University of Glasgow and completed the Mersey Deanery Training Programme in Cardiology and general medicine. He spent part of his training as a research fellow in the tertiary heart failure and heart transplant unit in Sheffield. During his training, he took more focused subspecialty training in echocardiography and cardiac imaging.

It is very common for cardiac patients to have other medical problems and vice versa. I am highly experienced and fully accredited in general medicine which is beneficial in all round cardiac patient management.”

Mr Mohammed has broad training and experience in general cardiology at both teaching hospitals and district general hospitals, including those in Staffordshire, Sheffield, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow. He has a specialist interest in cardiac imaging and how this affects the accuracy of assessment of cardiac abnormalities.

Lead cardiologist in St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in developing and integrating cardiac MRI service with other existing imaging modalities in the Trust.
Wide experience in invasive cardiology including coronary angiography and pacemaker implantation.
Over 12 months of experience in the assessment, management and follow up of heart failure and cardiac transplant patients at the transplant unit in Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital.
Supervised and reported over 1000 nuclear cardiology cases.
Performed over 1000 cases of coronary angiography.
Performed over 300 cases of single and dual chamber loop recorders implantation.

Specialist Cardiac Investigations or Procedures

Conditions covered

Breathlessness:

Clinical assessment and most investigations such as ECG and oxygen measures are undertaken at Pall Medical. More specialist tests can be organised at Whiston Hospital or Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital or local hospitals in Manchester.

Patients with known heart failure or valve disease can have their treatment optimised with an up-to-date assessment made.

Chest pain:

This symptom can be worrying to patients as it is often associated with angina or heart attack. Often a thorough assessment with a simple test, we can make a diagnosis when appropriate treatment is commenced. Specialist tests can be organised within a short waiting time to confirm the diagnosis and best long-term treatment.

Palpitations:

Most palpitations are due to benign extra heartbeats (ectopic) beats. Occasionally, important rhythm problems such as atrial fibrillation or ventricular rhythm problems can cause palpitations or dizziness symptoms. This can be diagnosed by 12 lead ECG or heart ECG monitor tests. Longer term monitoring of infrequent symptoms of faints, dizziness or severe palpitations can be arranged to establish the cause of such symptoms.

Blackout and Dizzy spells:

Changes in the heart rhythm that affect blood effective circulation can cause lightheadedness, dizziness or most severe cases blackout. Although most mild symptoms are benign and can be diagnosed by clinical assessment & bedside tests, the more severe symptoms can be due to severe bradycardia (slow heart rate) - these can be diagnosed by a heart monitor. On occasions, a pacemaker is needed to prevent the heart from going to slow causing these symptoms.

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension):

High blood pressure is relatively common, especially in older patients. Although it is often diagnosed and treated by your own GP, some patients have difficult to control blood pressure due to age or diabetes. Dr Mohammed has extensive experience in managing blood pressure aided by blood pressure monitor or home blood pressure readings.

Inherited Heart Conditions and Athlete Heart:

Heart conditions in younger people require initial assessment with cardiac imaging and tests for risk assessments many of which can be organised locally and referrals to suitable specialists for genetic testing and cardiac MRI making a detailed assessment for the affected individual or his/her family members.
