Whatever surgery you are looking to have, the right surgeon will have the skills and experience you require to get the results you want, safely. So how do you choose the right surgeon for you?
Be clear about what you want
Before you start your search for your perfect surgeon think realistically about what your desirable outcome is from the procedure.
You might find it useful to speak to people who have already undergone the procedure you’re considering and find out more about their personal experience.
As well as speaking with others, you should also visit online forums such as Trustpilot to see what reviews and feedback the surgeon or company you are looking to have your surgery with has received.
Check for qualifications
The best way to narrow your search is to compare the credentials of the surgeons you have found. You want to find a surgeon who is:
- Registered with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- An expert in the area of surgery
Be prepared to pay
Cosmetic surgery procedures can be expensive, however this is justified by their complex nature and the level of skill required to perform them safely and to a high level of standard.
Aim to meet at least two surgeons so that you can compare fees and example results.
Get the answers you need
Go to your initial consultation prepared by taking a list of questions with you to ensure you’ve asked everything you wanted to know to help make your decision.
Some questions you may want to ask include:
- What happens before, during and after the procedure?
- Will the results of the procedure match my expectations?
- How many of these operations have you performed in the last 12 months?
- What are the possible risks and side effects?
- What is the aftercare and recovery time?
- What happens if something goes wrong or if I’m not happy with the result?
You also want to have your surgeon asking you questions, including your medical history, and your reasons for surgery to ensure the surgery is the best option for you.
Take your time
The official advice is to take at least a two week “cooling off” period before committing to any surgery following your consultation.
The impact of surgery can last a lifetime so it’s essential for you to carefully complete all your research and fully consider all your options before committing to an operation.
