With the cold, dark nights drawing in, the transition into the winter season is most definitely upon us, which means one thing – Flu season is here.
With colder temperatures causing drier air, our mucous membranes become dehydrated preventing our bodies from defending themselves against respiratory virus infections, making us more prone to catching the flu during winter than any other time of the year.
However, as children have less advanced immune systems, are in close contact with each other at school and nursery and tend to have poorer hygiene habits they can be more susceptible to catching these winter viruses than adults, so parents may find they’re taking several visits to the doctor due to their child showing signs of cold or flu related symptoms.
Symptoms of the flu in children include:
– Sore throat
– Runny nose
In some children they can also develop:
– Muscle aches and pains
Thousands of children are hospitalised due to contracting the flu every year. However, preventative measures can be taken in order to reduce the risk of your child contracting and transmitting the flu with the simplest and most reliable being by vaccinating your child.
