Do you suffer from joint pain or have a sports injury? Then It’s time to bid farewell to niggling injuries, long recovery periods and ongoing painful joints with stem cell therapy.

Your path to healthier joints using Regenerative Medicine

Orthobiological treatments, such as stem cells, PRP (platelet rich plasma), APS (autologous protein solution) and Viscosupplementation, are designed to retain the joints, ligaments and tendons to their natural state by incorporating a combined biological approach that helps break the cycle of inflammation, cartilage/ tissue damage and loss of joint fluids. This is achieved by replenishing the anti-inflammatory and healing factors that are required to initiate and create a conducive environment in order to repair and regenerate  joints, cartilage and damaged tissues.

Skeletal and muscular health is imperative to a pain free life. The way our body is aligned, how it sits, how it stands – all these can have a direct effect on how we feel.

Stem cell therapy at Pall Mall Medical

At Pall Mall Medical, our regenerative medicine experts including Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Fahad Attar - use the latest biological advancements for a more natural approach to recovery include taking stem cells from the bone marrow or fat, autologous protein solution (APS) and platelet rich plasma (PRP) from your own body to treat various conditions such as:

  1. -  Osteoarthritis (Hip / Knee / Shoulder / Ankle / Wrist)
  2. -  Shoulder Rotator Cuff Disorders
  3. -  Tendon Tears
  4. -  Tendonitis
  5. -  Gluteal Tendon Tears
  6. -  Golfer’s and tennis Elbow
  7. -  Patella and Quadriceps Tendinopathy

What are Stem cells and how are they used for Joint Repair?

Our stem cell experts use Adult Mesenchymal Stem Cells extracted from bone marrow, along with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to treat most joint conditions. Regenerative medicine aims to restore function and joint health caused by tissue damage. This goal can be achieved by providing your own stem cells that are rich in healing factors that can stimulate an appropriate environment for these cells to grow. Among the different sources and types of stem cells, bone marrow derived stem cells have been proven by ample published evidence to consist of good quality of cells which in-turn, regenerate and repair the lost cartilage.  These cells are known to have the ability to potentially differentiate into the required cells to repair the site of injury.

How is stem cell treatments performed?

The stem cell injection is a treatment performed as a day case procedure under a short general anaesthetic. A single surgery is normally required and carried out as day-case procedure with or without an arthroscopy.  Once the patient is under a general anaesthetic, an aspirate of their blood and bone marrow is taken with a special needle. This is taken most commonly from the hip bone. The aspirate is then processed to prepare the appropriate stem cells in the operating theatre, and the stem cell injection is injected into the joint or target area. If a key hole procedure is required, this is performed prior to the injection. Our surgeons use special arthroscopy techniques to prepare the tissue bed so that it is ready to receive the stem cells.  The harvested stem cells, sometimes alongside a suitable scaffold, are then injected through the same keyholes that are routinely used for the arthroscopy.

How effective is stem cell therapy?

Patients usually demonstrate a rapid and progressive improvement in pain and function by 3-6 months. The duration of benefit from a stem cell treatment has been researched and evidenced to be an average of 1-2 years of benefit, though can be longer based on the individual patients case.

Once a patient feels a reduced pain relief or return of symptoms, it is recommended to repeat the diagnostic imaging at Pall Mall Medical and assess the joint or target area. Stem cell injections are very safe and the procedure can be repeated if the patient is suitable to continue the therapy.

Are there any side effects?

Stem cells are derived from the patient's own blood or bone marrow, so there is no risk of rejection or disease transmition. As with any injection/surgery, there is a risk of infection, but this is low.  The surgical procedures used for stem cell therapy are the same as those for a routine hip or knee arthroscopy operation which generally carry a degree of risk.
