What can a Private Gastroenterologist help with?

Gastroenterology looks at issues which affect the gastrointestinal tract (also known as the digestive system) which includes conditions affecting everything from the oesophagus down to the colon and rectum. Pall Mall Medical’s private gastroenterologists offer expert gastroenterology assessments for a diverse range of symptoms, which can lead to better management and treatment of any problems.

They have extensive experience in procedures including performing private colonoscopy, upper GI private endoscopy and percutaneous endoscopic gastronomy (PEG).

Our consultants in gastroenterology have a range of specialist interests and experience; below are just some of the conditions we can help you to diagnose and manage.

Inflammatory bowel disease

This term covers both ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease which cause inflammation of the gut resulting in a range of symptoms including exhaustion, stomach pains, diarrhoea (often with blood) and weight loss.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

IBS describes a number of symptoms which have no known cause and include bloating, stomach cramps, an urgent need to use the toilet (often during times of stress), flatulence and tiredness.

Coeliac disease

People suffering from coeliac disease may find that eating gluten can trigger symptoms including stomach pain, bloating and diarrhoea and long term this may cause problems such as malnutrition or weight loss. Coeliac disease causes the immune system to over react when gluten is found in the body, causing the above symptoms.

A lack of iron in the body can cause anaemia which has a range of symptoms including tiredness, heart palpitations and breathlessness. People with anaemia may also look very pale. Women who experience heavy periods or who are pregnant are often at a higher risk of anaemia.

Food intolerance

Common symptoms of being intolerant to a certain food include stomach pains and bloating as well as symptoms similar to IBS.

If our private gastroenterologists  believe you may be suffering from the above they may arrange for you to have a gastroscopy, private colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy and virtual colonoscopy if required.
