What is Breast Augmentation / Enlargement Surgery?

Breast augmentation or breast enlargement is a cosmetic surgery resulting in you having a larger, firmer and fuller bust. It is achieved by placing surgical grade implants underneath your natural tissue, which is why the process is commonly known as ‘getting breast implants’ or ‘having a boob job’.

What is a Mastopexy?

A mastopexy is more commonly known as a breast uplift surgery, a procedure to reshape your breasts into a more youthful and firm appearance. A consultant breast surgeon would do this by removing excess skin from underneath your breasts, and then tightening the skin and tissue; the nipple can then be repositioned to complete your new look. A mastopexy can be performed at the same time as your enlargement if required.

Why would you have a Breast enlargement or Uplift?

Breast enlargement surgery is the most popular cosmetic procedure for women in the UK and there are many different reasons that women like you choose to have it performed.

Some women believe that their breasts are not as full as they would like, and others feel that they are noticeably asymmetrical. Post-pregnancy and weight loss are also common factors in the decision to have implants as these life experiences can alter the look of the bust.

Due to these common body complaints, there are a number of psychological benefits that women have reported once having these procedures; these include:

  • Having greater self-confidence and self-esteem
  • The ability to fit into a wider range of clothes
  • A heightened feeling of femininity
  • Happiness with the symmetry of the bust.

How can we help?

As the NHS does not frequently fund cosmetic breast implant surgery, most women choose to have the operation done privately. At Pall Mall Medical, we have a team of consultants who are highly skilled in helping you to achieve your desired look.

As a next step, we recommend booking a free consultation with one of our surgeons to discuss the breast augmentation or uplift operation in more detail. During your consultation, you will be able to try out sample implants inside your bra so you can get a good idea about the size and shape you could achieve after surgery.

You can book a free, initial consultation with one of our breast surgeons today.

What does cosmetic breast surgery involve?

Breast augmentation surgery requires an incision to be made in the breast so that a surgical grade implant can be inserted behind or in front of the chest muscle, underneath the natural tissue. When the implant is in position, the incision will be closed with stitches, and depending on the patient’s individual circumstances, these may be dissolvable or may need removing after a week or so.

A mastopexy involves removing excess skin from beneath the breast and tightening the skin and tissue. The nipple may then be repositioned to suit the new shape of the breast.

Both procedures will require the patient going under general anaesthetic.  The operation can be expected to take between 1-2 hours, depending on the extent of surgery required.

Do breast implants come in different shapes and sizes?

As no two bodies are the same, breast implants come in a variety of sizes to suit different shapes and frames. The two most common shapes of implants are round and anatomical (teardrop shaped). Round implants are generally used to achieve a more dramatic, uplifted look with volume at the upper part of the breast, whereas teardrop shaped implants create a more natural, discreet look.

Another term to look out for when considering implants is ‘profile’. This is a guide to how far the implant will stand out or ‘project’. High and extra high profiles will achieve a larger projection whereas medium and low achieve a more subtle effect.

A thorough consultation with your surgeon will help determine the best implants to suit your body shape and to create the desired look that you are hoping to achieve.
