What is Breast Uplift / Mastopexy Surgery?

mastopexy, commonly known as a “breast uplift”, “breast uplift” or “boob lift” surgery, is a procedure to reshape your breasts into a more youthful and firm appearance. A Consultant Breast Surgeon or Consultant Plastic Surgeon does this by removing excess skin from underneath your breasts, and then tightening the skin and tissue; the nipple can then be repositioned to complete your new look.

When would I choose to have a Mastopexy?

A breast uplift procedure is a common surgery performed to create a “fuller” and more youthful appearance of their breasts. Women may opt for a breast mastopexy if they have:

  • Lost fullness and shape in their breasts after:
    • Child-birth / pregnancy
    • Weight loss
    • Natural ageing process
  • Breasts that are no longer firm and pert
  • Breasts that appear “flat” or “empty”*
  • Deflated breasts with loose skin and sagginess/sagging/lost elasticity

A mastopexy is a simple procedure to rejuvenate the appearance of the breasts. The procedure will mean your breasts look and feel firmer, with more volume, fullness and shape. It is often performed alongside breast enlargement, breast reduction or (mini-) abdominoplasty to help achieve the desired look.

* May require breast implants too in order to achieve the desired look

What does Breast Uplift Surgery involve?

Breast augmentation/enlargement surgery requires an incision to be made in the breast so that a surgical grade implant can be inserted behind or in front of the chest muscle, underneath the natural tissue. When the implant is in position, the incision will be closed with s tches, and depending on the patient’s individual circumstances, these may be A mastopexy involves removing excess skin from beneath the breast and tightening the skin and breast tissue. The surgeon will make a small incision around the areola, vertically down to below the breast and finally horizontally along the crease – this is often referred to as an “anchor scar” and fades with time significantly. The nipple may be repositioned, typically lighted higher, to suit the new shape of the breast.

The procedure will require under general anaesthesia and is expected to take between 1-2 hours, depending on the extent of surgery required. Overnight stay may be required, although most procedures are performed as a day case. The time in theatre may be longer in duration if combined with another procedure.
