Split Ear Lobe & Tribal Ear Loge Overview

Split ear lobe: Earlobes can split from pierced ears gradually enlarging from wearing heavy earrings. On other occasions, when the lobe can split is when an earring is forcefully pulled.

Tribal ear lobe: As well as heavy earrings causing split earlobes, over the past years there has been an increase of “tribal ear lobe” correction surgery, due to the rising trend of ‘ear stretching ’, caused by gradually placing a cone shaped earring in the pierced hole and pushing it through more each day, deliberately stretching the hole to eventually to accommodate for much larger ‘plugs/tunnels’. This causes a person’s earlobe expand excessively where it is not able to return to its original size or cause the lobe to split.

What is Split Ear Lobe and Tribal Ear Lobe corrective surgery?

Earlobe repair surgery can be performed to correct earlobes that have been stretched (tribal) or split. The price for earlobe repair varies according to whether you require split earlobe repair or tribal (stretched) earlobe repair and the degree of correction you require.

What are the benefits of Split & Tribal Ear Lobe surgery?

  • Earlobes will be restored to their normal shape and size.
  • Having earlobe surgery will restore confidence in appearance
  • Once a full recovery is made, earlobes can be re pierced

The Ear Lobe Surgery procedure

Earlobe repair surgery can be performed to correct earlobes stretched or to split earlobes.  It is a relatively quick and simple procedure conducted under local anaesthetic. The repair firstly involves the edges of the torn lobe to be removed. Fine sutures are then used so the earlobe is accurately repaired; this allows a normal, rounded earlobe that matches your natural ear shape to be created.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a good candidate for split / tribal ear lobe surgery?

If your stretched or split earlobes are affecting your appearance, social life and career, then this surgery would be an ideal solution.

What are the risks of split earlobe surgery?

The surgeon will discuss any risks with you, however some risks may include:

  • Scars may be noticeable due to bad healing
  • Uneven lobes are possible with untrained or unskilled surgeons – Pall Mall Medical only use highly experienced and highly skilled surgeons
  • Sutures are used in this surgery, these may become infected if they are not cared for properly.

How long will it take for my ear lobes to heal?

The repair process is minimal with split / tribal ear lobe surgery. Sutures are typically removed within a week and some mild swelling and stitches may be visible for up to 7 days after surgery.

How soon can I get my ears pierced after split / tribal ear lobe repair?

Typically about 6 weeks should be required to heal prior to to re-piercing. To allow the earlobe to heal, we encourage patients to wear clip on earrings following the corrective surgery.

How soon after the surgery can I wash my hair?

Sutures and steri-strips need to stay dry for five days following split ear lobe surgery. During this time, washing your hair can be done as long as the ear lobe and steri-strips remain dry. The morning of the suture removal appointment, patients will be asked to shower and shampoo the hair prior to the appointment. When the sutures are removed, steri-strips frequently need to be reapplied; in which case the patient would again need to keep the area dry for another five days.

Will split ear lobe surgery affect my daily activities?

There is little interruption to your daily activities. To make sure sutures are not disturbed, patients will be asked to switch ears when using the telephone. Patients should avoid turtlenecks or tight fitting clothing that are removed over the head.  Physical activities should be avoided for one week following surgery. It’s important to avoid bending, lifting or straining during this post-operative period as these activities can increase swelling and delay healing.

Is receiving split / tribal ear lobe surgery painful?

Mild discomfort can be expected after surgery. All patients are provided with prescriptions for pain medication. Patients sometimes use the prescription medication two to three days after surgery.

How long will bruising and swelling last?

Post-operative bruising and swelling begins to resolve at the end of the first week. For patients with a history of easy bruising, resolution of bruising or swelling may take two weeks. However, bruises can be camouflage fairly easily with a concealer stick.

Will I be awake during surgery?

It’s common with most cases to use a local anaesthesia (the lobe area numbed), so patients will be awake. Sedation is rarely needed with split ear corrective surgery. General anaesthetic will not be required.

How long does the split ear lobe surgery take?

Surgery time can vary with each patient. The length of time for split ear lobe repair depends on factors which include the nature and amount of trauma to the ear, and the individual complexities of each ear lobe. In general, split ear lobe repair can take up to one hour but is often performed in 30-45 minutes.

Can I drive myself home after surgery?

Because local anaesthesia is often used with this surgery, driving home is allowed. Although uncommon, if a sedative is requested, patients are not able to drive themselves home after the surgery.

Are there scars after an earlobe repair?

Because the split earlobe is stitched together, a scar will form. This scar is typically a fine line that is difficult to detect and over time should fade.

When can I go back to work or school?

Most patients return to work or school the day following split ear lobe surgery.
