Reduce excessive sweating known as Hyperhidrosis without the need for surgery. Now there is a solution for Hyperhidrosis using Botulinum Toxin injections. Get back to your normal lifestyle without any embarrassment and stop those sweaty armpits with a single treatment session with our specialist Aesthetic Doctor or Surgeons.

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis (or excessive sweating) is the production of sweat which is in excess of that needed for normal thermoregulation. The condition, although often goes unreported, can have a negative effect on quality of life, causing stress and embarrassment. It may be associated with an unpleasant odour (bromhidrosis) caused by products of bacteria that colonise sweaty areas. We treat this at Pall Mall Medical using Botulinum Toxin.

Hyperhydrosis can be primary (idiopathic hyperhidrosis) and secondary hyperhidrosis. Furthermore, excessive sweating in patients can be either in a localised area (focal) or over the entire body (generalised) affecting common areas such as underarms, hands, feet, scalp and groin.

What Can I Do To Reduce Hyperhidrosis?

In general, patients are advised about making lifestyle changes which may help the condition. Initial advice includes:

  • identifying any trigger factors and avoiding them e.g. - spicy foods or alcohol, stressful situations, and identifiable emotional triggers
  • using antiperspirant spray rather than deodorant
  • wearing loose-fitting clothes made of natural fibres and using dress shields to absorb sweat.
  • wearing leather shoes only
  • minimise obvious signs of sweating by wearing black or white clothing
  • use emollient washers and moisturisers rather than soap-based cleansers.

Treatment For Hyperhidrosis

To treat severe underarm sweating, Botulinum Toxin works by blocking the secretion of the chemical that activates sweat glands.  The amount of sweating would be reduced by injections of Botulinum Toxin close to the sweat glands. It has been shown to result in approx 80-90% decrease in sweating. Results start to be noticeable approximately 2 to 4 days after treatment with the full effects usually noted within 2 weeks.

How Long Does Hyperhidrosis Treatment Last?

As the Botulinum toxin wears off the sweating might gradually return, so there is a need to repeat the injections. The effect of the injections usually lasts for several months, after which time the treatment can be repeated if necessary. Results can vary from person to person, but most people can benefit from between 3 - 12 months with a single treatment. Treatment consists of around 15-20 injections by our Aesthetic Doctor or Surgeon and the appointment usually takes about 45 minutes.
