Hyperhidrosis (or excessive sweating) is the production of sweat which is in excess of that needed for normal thermoregulation. The condition, although often goes unreported, can have a negative effect on quality of life, causing stress and embarrassment. It may be associated with an unpleasant odour (bromhidrosis) caused by products of bacteria that colonise sweaty areas. We treat this at Pall Mall Medical using Botulinum Toxin.
Hyperhydrosis can be primary (idiopathic hyperhidrosis) and secondary hyperhidrosis. Furthermore, excessive sweating in patients can be either in a localised area (focal) or over the entire body (generalised)
Primary disease is usually focal and may affect
Secondary hyperhidrosis can be generalised or focal.
Prevalence of hyperhidrosis is reported to be around 1%. This figure is thought to be much higher since a majority of cases are not reported to primary care.
According to a large American national survey, only 38% of patients with a primary pattern of symptoms had consulted a health professional.
In general, patients should be advised about lifestyle changes which may help the condition. Initial advice includes:
Botulinum Toxin is also a known treatment for this condition. The amount of sweating would be reduced by injections of Botulinum toxin close to the sweat glands. The effects will start in 48 hours and the maximum effect would be around 10-14 days after the injection.
As the Botulinum toxin wears off the sweating might gradually return, so there is a need to repeat the injections again after few months.
Pall Mall Medical offer Hyperhidrosis Underarm treatment where botulinum toxin (commonly known as ‘botox’) is injected into the skin under armpits. This helps reduce sweating in these areas by blocking the signals from the brain to the sweat glands.
Around 15-20 injections are given and the procedure usually takes about 45 minutes. The effect of the injections usually lasts for several months, after which time the treatment can be repeated if necessary.
Hyperhidrosis Underarm Treatment is carried by our highly experienced GPs and plastic surgeons.
