Book your appointment

Zika virus is a disease mainly spread by mosquitoes, the disease is especially dangerous to pregnant women and for couples who are trying to conceive. The disease spreads geographically to different areas of the world, it is important to understand the risks of this virus and how to stay safe if you are travelling somewhere the disease may be present.

Pall Mall Medical offers the most advanced testing options with our practice nurse. Testing fees include a consultation with our nurse discussing the Zika virus and your risks of transmission. The nurse may ask questions for example;

  • Information regarding your vaccination history
  • Your travel history
  • If you have any intentions of conceiving or current stage of pregnancy
  • And if you have any symptoms

What are the Different Types of Zika Virus Test?

The difference between the two Zika Virus tests is the window of detection from the onset of symptoms or potential exposure to the virus.

The blood test (Zika Antibodies IgG and IgM) is effective from 7 days of symptoms or potential contact with the virus. However, for earlier detection, we also offer the more advanced urine test (Zika by PCR), with detection from 1 to 14 days from onset of symptoms or potential contact with the virus.

During the consultation our practice nurse can discuss which test is most suitable for you, dependant on these different stages or risk factors. You will have results back within 5 days of having the blood test (Zika antibodies IgG and IgM) or results back within 7 days of the urine test (Zika by PCR). Antibodies of the Zika virus should be present from 2 weeks of being exposed to the virus and the best method of detection depends on the stage of the disease.

We also offer a wide range of other travel health and diagnostic services within our clinics. For more information on these please visit the following link  http://www.pallmallmedical.co.uk/vaccinations
