CROMWELL  1    -    NEWTON  5

Report by Beverley McInnes...

A cold, foggy day greeted the players at Cromwell, and following a lacklustre warm up, Newton FC needed to pull something out of the bag if this game was to go their way.

The lads took the warm up into the early part of the game when Cromwell were very competitive in midfield and looked a threat up front. In fact, Newton took the lead against the run of play when Tyler slalomed past a few challenges and finished at the near post. This was just the confidence boost the team needed as they started to control the game. It wasn't long before Newton produced two of the best worked goals of the season resulting in them taking a 2-0 lead.

An excellent passing move from the back also led to Joe M sliding a sublime pass through to James T who finished with aplomb. Cromwell were fighting hard to get back in the game and had a good chance for Matty to save bravely at the feet of the oncoming attacker. Just before half-time Newton put the game beyond doubt when James T got his 2nd and Newton's 3rd by dinking a nice shot around the keeper

The half time team talk talked of keeping concentration, playing as if it was 0-0 and looking for the next goal. Newton totally controlled the second half against an increasingly dispirited Cromwell side. Joe B then got the 4th with a superbly executed drive from outside of the box that sailed past the keeper. Then, Liam D was put through only to see his shot saved - Unfortunatly for Cromwell this was by their centre half rather than their keeper and Liam D did the honours in the resultant penalty, calmly slotting past the keeper. Another easy decision for the ref followed as Cromwell was awarded a penalty. Matty tipped the penalty onto the bar but the rebound was driven in by the striker. There was still time for James T to send a tommy trickler of a penalty into the arms of the Cromwell keeper and Cameron to blaze over the bar from two yards. "We will be sending both lads to Pall Mall to get their eyes tested or to put their feet the right way round" the team coach joked shortly after...

So a very welcome 5-1 victory to Newton with Joe B winning man of the match for an excellent, controlling performance in midfield. However, all the lads should be happy with their performance as they played some excellent football in attack and were strong and determined in defence....
