Newton 3  Senley and Garswood 5

Injuries and holiday's meant that 8 lads were missing from the squad leaving Newton with a bare 10 lads to fight a Garswood team fighting for the league table. It was down to caretaker manager Stephen to gee the lads up before the game. Using his trusty cones he decided on the final formation.

From the outset, Garswood were strong and quick and held the upper hand. Newton were clinging on but it came as no surprise when Garswood took the lead. Three goals quickly followed and it became clear that at 4-0 down it would take something special for Newton to keep the score down.

The half time team talk was of playing for the next goal and winning the second half. This seemed to inspire the lads and they dashed out for the second half with a slight change in formation as Matty came on for Luke to take goalkeeping duties (who really shouldn't have played due to illness). Newton quickly gained control.  Mo, Joe M and Liam D started to trouble the Garswood backline and some strong tackling from Joe B and James Mc meant that Garswood struggled to make headway. Cameron also played far deeper with some timely interventions. Newton scored quickly; A strong run from Mo led to Matty slotting in from close range. A few minutes later, a copycat goal with Mo to Matty again for 4-2. We then got a free-kick from distance which Liam D beautifully curled in. At 4-3, Garwood were rocking and Newton were throwing their all into the game. However, the lads were clearly tiring and Garswood were able to put the game beyond doubt with an excellently taken 5th.

So 5-3 to Garswood but every Newton player should be proud of their performance as they ran a very good team close with 10 men. We had two players for man of the match this week, Mo and his tireless running and Matty with two excellently taken goals.
