Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) facials gained popularity in 2013 when reality TV star Kim Kardashian underwent a Vampire Facial™ on her TV show Kourtney and Kim Take Miami. Since then other celebrities, including supermodel Bar Refaeli and actor Rupert Everett have praised the procedure.
What happens during the procedure?
During a consultation, you can discuss any issues with your skin and the areas you’d like the PRP facial to focus on, such as acne scars, fine wrinkles or general rejuvenation of the skin.
The first stage of the treatment involves applying a topical anaesthetic to the face to numb the skin. Next, blood is taken from the arm and placed in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the blood. It’s the plasma that will be used to rejuvenate your skin.
Once the plasma has been separated, the health professional will then use tiny needles to inject the plasma into the skin. Any areas which need extra attention can have the plasma injected deeper into them in a similar way a synthetic filler would be applied.
In total the procedure takes around 30-45 minutes.
The key benefits of platelet rich plasma facials
Despite its slightly gruesome alternative name, it’s clear to see why PRP facials are so popular for revitalising the skin. Below we look at the benefits of having this procedure done.
The procedure is non-invasive
Unlike cosmetic facial surgery, this procedure is not invasive and doesn’t involve any incisions in the skin, the procedure also doesn’t involve any lasers. You won’t need to have general anaesthetic to have the treatment done as an anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin to numb it prior to the procedure. The treatment is done using tiny needles which just penetrate the surface of the skin, but you may also have plasma injected deeper into the skin for problem areas or deep set wrinkles. If you want smoother, younger looking skin without going under the knife then PRP could be for you.
Quick results that get better with time
As soon as the procedure is finished, you should be able to see a noticeable difference to your skin as lines and wrinkles will appear smoother. Your complexion may be a little red for a couple of days after the procedure as the needles gently puncture the skin which stimulates the growth of collagen and elastin, two natural chemicals which make the skin look more youthful. During the days and weeks after your treatment, the results will continue to improve as the plasma further stimulates the collagen and elastin to grow fresh cells under the skin, making the skin look fuller.
It stimulates your own collagen
The ‘controlled damage’ caused by the tiny needles puncturing the skin stimulates the growth of collagen and elastin to build up the surface of the skin which can reduce the signs of aging. The plasma further stimulates collagen and elastin fibres as the substance contains growth factors which are beneficial in wound healing and in this procedure it’s the needles which are creating the tiny ‘wounds’.
No risk of allergy or rejection
As the procedure uses your own plasma, there is no risk of an allergic reaction or of the body rejecting the plasma as it’s already a part of your body’s own regenerative tissue. The procedure involves no foreign bodies so even if you are sensitive to other non-invasive procedures, you will be unlikely to have a reaction to PRP.
A quick solution with long lasting results
The procedure takes around 30-45 minutes to complete. It is such a quick procedure as the plasma needs to be injected back into the skin within 10 minutes of being extracted to get the full benefit. The results should last around 12 months, making the procedure superb value for money.
