Heatwave Hay Fever - What You Should Know

By The Mum Blogger,

Mum blogger explores a few different tips and tricks to relieve the symptoms of hay fever in the summer months.

Summer is finally here and we’re seeing record temperatures this week and some glorious sunshine. But what does this mean for those of us with allergies? Well, millions of hay fever sufferers could be at risk thanks to a ‘unholy union’ of hot weather and soaring pollen levels.

This cocktail will likely mean people will have more moderate to severe hay fever symptoms like; coughing, wheezing, tight chest and breathlessness, not to mention the increase in the amount of pollutants, pollen and mould in the air which can trigger asthma symptoms too.

So, as we flock outdoors this weekend to celebrate the start of the school holidays - what can we do about our hay fever? Here’s a few of my tips to help:

  • Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration
  • Plan your outdoor activities for earlier in the day, when the air quality tends to be better
  • Make sure you’re taking your antihistamines every day
  • Use eye drops to calm down any itchiness (remember to get contact lens friendly if you wear lenses)
  • Try wraparound sunglasses to minimise the chance of pollen getting into your eyes
  • Shower and change clothes after being outside to help remove any remaining pollen
  • Use Vaseline around the nose/ears to trap pollen from entering them
  • Clean as much as possible - vacuum and dust regularly to reduce pollen in the home

Not getting any relief from your current remedies. Have you heard of the hay fever injection?

This is a prescription strength option, ideal for people with moderate to severe hay fever symptoms.  If you are one of the unlucky ones that are confined to staying indoors or losing out on the summer sun and outdoor festivities, maybe this is the ultimate option for you to deal with those annoying symptoms!

You’ll be happy to know that this simple treatment can provide long and effective relief throughout the Summer. It involves just one injection, given in the top of the buttock.

Most people find it kicks in anywhere from 24-72 hours after administration, as our immune system differs from person to person.

If you’re interested, a thorough assessment can be undertaken by a clinic such as Pall Mall Medical, to make sure the treatment is right for you.

The relief of symptoms with the injection can be dramatically better to taking oral antihistamine tablets, nasal sprays and eye drops. While this is fantastic, you need to be aware that it’s not always 100% effective though, you may still feel some very mild symptoms.

A lot of my friends comment that the result of the injection was great, allowing them to get outdoors, play with their kids in the garden or even to just mow the lawn again.

You can see my friend Tim receiving his injection at Pall Mall Medical, it really is painless and takes just a couple of minutes.
