Hormone Replacement Therapy...

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

By Dr Gendy, Consultant Gynaecologist,

Menopause is a natural part of a woman’s life cycle - a time when the oestrogen and progesterone levels decrease, the risk for certain conditions like osteoporosis or cardiovascular disease may increase.

To manage its symptoms, every woman must maintain a healthy diet coupled with an exercise regime and a Hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT is a treatment used to relieve symptoms of the menopause. It replaces hormones that are at a lower level as you approach the menopause.

Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy:

Menopause may come along with discomforts and health risks, but HRT can help reduce these. HRT reduces the risk of various chronic conditions that can affect postmenopausal women.

  • Helps balance the oestrogen and progesterone in women around the time of menopause.
  • Helps in relieving common menopausal discomforts like sweating, hot flashes etc
  • Reduces a women’s risk of developing diabetes
  • Prevents further bone density loss, preserving bone integrity and reducing the risk of fractures
  • Slightly reduces the risk of colorectal cancer.

Types of Hormone replacement therapy:

There are many different types of HRT:

  • Estrogen-only HRT: Women who have had a hysterectomy where their uterus, or womb, and ovaries have been removed do not need progesterone.
  • Cyclical, or sequential HRT: Women who are still menstruating but have perimenopausal-like symptoms can use this. Cycles may be monthly, with an estrogen plus progestogen dose as suggested by the consultant
  • Continuous HRT: This is used during post menopause - a continuous combination of estrogen and progestogen to tide over the phase.
  • Local estrogen: This includes vaginal tablets, creams, or rings. It also helps with urogenital problems, including dry vagina and irritations

HRT Regime:

HRT treatment may be taken continuously without a break, or in cycles as suggested by the consultant.

Ways of delivering HRT include:

  • creams or gels
  • vaginal rings
  • tablets
  • skin patches

Menopausal symptoms can be managed with education, lifestyle changes, support and hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

HRT is an effective therapy for menopausal symptoms.

The decision to use HRT, and for how long it should be used, must be based on individual assessment and needs

Remember, HRT does not cause weight gain and neither is it a form of contraception.

Risks and side effects of HRT

HRT may cause some side effects like breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, indigestion, abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding. But these will gradually phase out.

HRT may at times also cause a mild risk of certain problems like blood clots and breast cancer. But, the benefits of HRT definitely outweigh the risks associated.

If you are in the menopausal phase, our experienced GPs and consultants at Pall Mall Medical will assist you overcoming any issues related to it after a complete health analysis and will advise you on the best HRT for you. Also, any concerns and doubts related to the HRT can also be clarified for you to experience a healthy living.
