Eyes are the most beautiful, expressive and important facial feature of any person’s face. Unfortunately, they are the first areas of the face to show signs of aging - droopy lids, sagging skin, excess fat, bulging, etc! It is very much likely that the sag or the bulge around your eye may lead to a low self-esteem and a sense of ageing. To overcome these signs of aging, an eyelid surgery may be able to help you. The Blepharoplasty procedure can help you achieve a youthful and refreshed look once again by tightening the loose skin around the eyes.
What is an eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance and helps rejuvenate the eyelid contours by modifying skin, fat, or muscles of the eyelids. It gives the eyes and face a younger, more appealing and well-rested appearance.
Depending on your requirement, the surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.
Eyelid surgery can be:
· Cosmetic: performed to enhance the appearance of the area surrounding your eye.
· Functional: performed when you are experiencing obstruction in vision due to drooping or sagging upper eyelids.
How do I know if I should undergo Blepharoplasty?
Carefully examine your eye in the mirror - if you witness any one of the following features, you may be suitable for Blepharoplasty:
· Droopy eyelids
· Sagging skin
· Excess fat on the eyelid
· Bulging or puffy eyelid
· Grooves under the eye
· Eyes appearing tired or aged
What’s involved in eyelid surgery?
An eyelid surgery procedure is a minor surgical procedure and is managed as a day care case generally, involving a general or local anaesthetic. Prior to the surgery, the cosmetic surgeon will closely study the contours and shape of your eyelid. He will then plan the incision and carry out the procedure to achieve the look as desired by you.
Eyelid surgery is a procedure that can be done for your upper eyelid or your lower eyelid or both within the same procedure; depending on what suits best for you. We at Pall Mall Medical ensure that we customize the procedure as we do not believe in ‘one size fits all’.
The following steps are involved in the procedure:
1. Administration of the Anaesthesia
During your consultation, your Surgeon will discuss the benefits and risks over whether the local anaesthetic or the general anaesthetic is best for you and begin the procedure. Anaesthesia is administered to ensure a smooth and comfortable procedure.
2. The incision
Following the natural creases of the upper eyelid, incisions are made in such a way by our expert Surgeon, such that any resulting scar will be camouflaged.
The incision lines for eyelid surgery are designed so the resultant scars will be well concealed within the natural structures of the eyelid region.
The upper eyelid can be corrected through an incision within the natural crease on the eyelid. This allows for removal or repositioning of fat deposits, tightening of muscles and removal of excess skin.
3. Removal of excess skin/ fat:
Excess skin is removed through the incision made and the rest of the surgery is carried out. Any excess skin in the eyelid is removed and the excess fat is either removed or repositioned or even re-distributed.
4. Suturing the incision
The incisions made on the eyelids are generally either sutured or glued. The sutures used can be the traditional absorbable or dissolvable. All sutures are removed within a week post-op.
5. Final Outcome
It takes a few months for you to completely heal from the swelling and bruises, irritation and dry eyes etc. Hence, the results of blepharoplasty will be noticed gradually as the region heals completely to reveal a smooth, well-rested and better-defined eyelid and importantly a rejuvenated appearance!
Will the scars be visible post the surgery?
The cosmetic surgeon is careful enough to not leave any visible marks and generally, the procedure is carried out with such precision using the latest techniques that there is virtually no scar visible!
Initially, immediately post – op, the scar will be visible and appear reddish, like any scar post a surgery. You may feel a slight bulge as well. Gradually, as the scar heals, it will fade away. It will take some weeks for the complete recovery as it is not merely an incision; rather, a cut through muscle, tendons, fat, etc.
Follow the advice of your surgeon for the best results and achieve a healthier, younger, and a well-rested appearance.
How long will the result of Blepharoplasty last?
Although it may take a while for you to completely heal and appreciate your look, the effect lasts for as long as up to 15 years! But, it is important to remember that you need to take care and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Proper nutrition, good hydration, and plenty of exercise will go a long way in maintaining that youthful face beaming with confidence.
To ensure the longevity of the result of blepharoplasty, rest is very important. Hence, you need to inculcate healthy and regular sleep habits as part of your daily schedule. If you smoke, it is advised that you reduce or completely give up on this habit as cigarette smoke can lead to skin sagging,
Are there any risks involved in Blepharoplasty?
