Virtual Colonoscopy

Virtual Colonoscopy

For your examination to be successful it is really important that we prepare your bowel correctly so that the radiologist can see the inside of the bowel wall clearly.

To do this it is important that you please follow our instructions correctly.

Please follow the low residue diet for 3 days before your scan.

A diet sheet can be found at the end of this leaflet explaining what you can eat but more importantly what you should avoid eating, there are also examples of menus just to help you.

You will have been given some bowel preparation when you made your appointment.

Gastrografin - this is an iodine based liquid, (supplied in a bottle containing 100mls), which you will need to take with meals according to the instructions below. It has an aniseed taste. This liquid will mix with your food and this will enable the reporting radiologist to identify any remaining faeces left in your bowel at the time of your examination. The first dose of gastrografin could cause you some loose bowel motions which you should be prepared for this.

You must read the information leaflet given to you with this medication;

Please Note:

If you are allergic to iodine or have any hypersensitivity to iodine or any of the other ingredients listed in section you MUST NOT take the Gastrografin and YOU MUST inform us immediately.

  • It is important that you continue to take all prescribed medication.
  • If you are taking iron tablets you should stop these 5 days before your scan.
  • Diabetic patients - please contact your diabetic nurse should you need any advice
  • Female patients - if you are breast feeding do not take gastrografin and advise us immediately.
