Flu Vaccination

People who are more susceptible to complications resulting from flu, including pregnant women, over 65s and at-risk children, are offered the flu jab on the NHS. If you do not fit into one of these groups but would still like to be vaccinated against the flu virus then the vaccination is available privately.

Children older than six months can have the vaccination and should this be their first time for vaccination then a course of two is required.

Adults will only need a single dose.

BCG Vaccination

The BCG vaccines vaccinates against tuberculosis (TB), a bacterial infection which causes a range of symptoms including coughing, fever, fatigue and loss of appetite. This type of TB vaccination is not given routinely and instead is given to babies and children who have recently arrived from countries with TB or who have been in contact with people who have been infected with TB.

You need to have one of the internationally-accepted Mantoux skin tests before you have a BCG vaccination.

Mantoux test shows whether your body has ever been exposed to TB germs before.

This skin test involves injecting a substance called PPD tuberculin into the skin of your forearm.

You require two appointments for the Mantoux test – first to administer the test then after 48 hours to measure the results.

If Mantoux test shows you are suitable to have the BCG vaccination and you wish to have it, BCG vaccination can be administered on the second appointment.

Chicken Pox Vaccine

Chickenpox is not a serious illness but it can be very uncomfortable for children as the symptoms include flu-like symptoms and a very itchy rash. As chickenpox is not a serious illness and children only usually get the illness once, immunisation is not routinely available on the NHS. If you are concerned that your child (or yourself) is at risk from catching a serious illness as a result of chickenpox then speak to Pall Mall Medical about a chickenpox vaccination.

Dose

This can be administered from one year of age through to adults.

Two doses should be given, with an interval between doses of at least 6 weeks but in no circumstances less than 4 weeks.

One dose of Varilrix (chickenpox vaccine) may be administered after a first dose of another varicella containing vaccine.

If you are pregnant you should not have this vaccine.

This immunisation is given to children from six weeks old to help prevent pneumococcal disease which can lead to a number of serious illnesses including bacterial meningitis and pneumonia. The vaccine is given in four doses at two months, four months, six months and 12-15 months.

This vaccine is given as part of a routine infant immunisation programme from 6 weeks of age; a series consisting of three doses should be given plus a booster dose.

The first dose may be administered from the age of 6 weeks, each injection will be given at least one month apart. A fourth injection (booster) is recommended between 11 and 15 months of age. If a baby is not vaccinated before 7-11 months then two doses will be required with an interval of at least 1 month between doses. A third dose is recommended in the second year of life. For children aged 12-23 months, two doses with an interval of at least 2 months between dose. Children aged 2-5 years only require one single dose.

HPV Vaccine

The human papilloma virus (HPV) is a highly contagious family of viruses, some of which can cause cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine is given to girls aged 12 and 13 and is given via three injections over three months.

The vaccine is recommended from the ages of 9-26. The primary vaccination series consists of 3 separate doses, after the first dose a second dose is required 2 months later and then the third dose follows 6 months later.

If an alternate vaccination schedule is necessary, the second dose should be administered at least one month after the first dose and the third dose should be administered at least 3 months after the second dose. All three doses should be given within a 1-year period.

The need for a booster dose has not been established.

It is recommended that individuals who receive a first dose of HPV vaccine (either Gardasil or Cervarix) complete the 3-dose vaccination course with the same brand of HPV vaccine.

Special Information

Vaccination is not a substitute for routine cervical screening. Since no vaccine is 100% effective and Gardasil or Cervarix will not provide protection against every HPV type, or against existing HPV infections or cancers, routine cervical screening remains critically important and should follow local recommendations.

The duration of protection is currently unknown. Sustained protective efficacy has been observed for 4.5 years after completion of the 3-dose series. Longer term follow-up studies are ongoing.

Children should be vaccinated against Men C at three and 12 months, with a booster injection in their early teens. The meningitis group C infection can cause meninges and septicaemia so if you’re unsure if your child is protected talk to the experts at Pall Mall Medical for advice.

For children aged 12 months and over, adolescents and adults, only one dose of the vaccine is needed.

For infants under 12 months, three doses are required.

The meningitis C vaccine (MenC) protects against infection by meningococcal group C bacteria, which can cause meningitis and septicaemia.

Note: MenC does not protect against other types of meningitis caused by other bacteria or by viruses.

MMR Vaccine

This vaccine is given in two doses and is designed to protect children from measles, mumps and rubella – common childhood diseases which can lead to serious conditions such as meningitis, encephalitis and deafness.

For Adults

Adults born from 1970 or later should have at least one dose of MMR vaccine unless they fall into an exception group.

Due to the risk of birth defects with rubella, all women of childbearing age should have the MMR vaccination unless they're currently pregnant or have confirmation of immunity from their doctor.

Adults at greater risk of exposure to measles or mumps get a second dose of MMR vaccine, given four weeks after the first dose:

  • Those at risk who may need second dose of MMR vaccine
  • Have been exposed to measles or mumps or live in an area where an outbreak has occurred
  • Are teachers or students in colleges
  • Travel internationally
  • Work in health care facilities

The vaccine is given as a single injection.

For Children

Two doses of MMR vaccine are given after the child’s first year between 12 and 15 months of age. The second dose is given at 4 to 6 years of age. This provides full protection for children from these unpleasant diseases.

Pneumonia Vaccine

Suitable for children under the age of two, the pneumonia vaccine (also known as pneumococcal vaccine), can help protect against pneumococcal infections which can lead to meningitis. Children have the injection in three doses, at two, four and 12 or 13 months old, adults need just one vaccination for life long protection.

The vaccine is a single dose vaccine for both children and adults

Children under 2 years old should not be vaccinated.

Healthy adults should not be re-vaccinated routinely.

Healthy children should not be re-vaccinated routinely.

Adults

Re-vaccination of pneumonia vaccine should only be considered for persons at increased risk of serious pneumococcal infection who were given pneumococcal vaccine more than five years earlier or for those known to have a rapid decline in pneumococcal antibody levels. For selected populations (e.g. asplenics) who are known to be at high risk of fatal pneumococcal infections, re-vaccination at three years may be considered.

Children between the ages of 2 and 10 years

Should only be considered for re-vaccination after 3 years if they are at high risk of pneumococcal infection (e.g. those with nephrotic syndrome, asplenia or sickle cell disease).
