What Is a Prostate MRI (Multi-Parametric‑MRI)

Multi-Parametric MRI (mpMRI) is used before prostate biopsies to provide a clearer and more reliable picture of the prostate. Using mpMRI first can identify around one in four men who can safely avoid having a biopsy altogether.

How mpMRI improves prostate cancer detection

TRUS (transrectal ultrasound) biopsies are still widely used for hundreds of thousands of men each year to diagnose prostate cancer, but they often miss clinically significant or aggressive prostate cancers. At the same time, they can detect low-risk cancers that may never cause harm leading to unnecessary worry and medical intervention. They’re also uncomfortable and carry risks such as infection, bleeding and urinary pain.

Using mpMRI as a triage test before considering a biopsy greatly improves accuracy. It reduces the number of men who need to undergo a biopsy while still detecting more than 90% of clinically significant prostate cancers. This means fewer unnecessary procedures, fewer complications, and far greater confidence in diagnosis.

What to expect during your Prostate mp-MRI scan

Duration Typically, you can expect your scan to take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on imaging complexity

Preparation No special preparation needed; you may prefer to wear comfortable clothing. You'll be asked to remove any metal objects and jewellery before lying in the scanner.

Results A detailed radiologist report is generated, and results can be delivered quickly so you or your GP or urologist can follow up. Our urology team is ready to guide further tests or a treatment plan if necessary.

Do I need a GP referral?

No - you can self-refer for a prostate MRI at Pall Mall Medical.

Are there any risks?

It’s a very safe scan. There’s no radiation, though in some cases we may use contrast dye. Side-effects are rare but can include mild headache or nausea.

How soon will I get the results?

You’ll receive a full radiologist report - typically within a week.

Can I have a copy of my images?

Radiology images can be sent when requested. We are unable to send radiology images directly to NHS general practitioners; image transfers to NHS services must follow established clinical pathways and secure exchange platforms. We do not provide printed copies, postal delivery, or screenshots of imaging; images are sent via electronic transfer using Image Exchange Portal (IEP). Images will only be released to patients or third parties once the formal report has been issued

Are my scans and notes from Pall Mall available to an NHS doctor?

Yes. All clinical notes, lab results, and diagnostic images (such as MRI DICOM files) generated at Pall Mall Medical belong to you and can be securely transferred directly to your NHS GP or hospital consultant. Because your NHS specialist receives fully compiled diagnostic results, they can immediately place you into the NHS treatment queue under the Faster Diagnosis Standard without repeating early tests.
