What is an Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart. It is sometimes just called an 'ECHO'. Ultrasound is a very high-frequency sound that you cannot hear, but it can be emitted and detected by special machines.

The ECHO scan can give accurate pictures of the heart structures including the muscle, the chambers, and valves. It can help to identify heart problems along with other tests like ECGs and Heart Health screens.

Do I need a referral to book an ECHO scan?

No referral is required when booking an echocardiogram with us, however we do require some clinical information in order to complete our internal booking form.

What information does an Echocardiogram provide?

An echocardiogram can give information about the size, shape and structure of the heart and the valves, as well as the location and extent of any tissue damage. It helps to identify certain types of heart disease.

They are also useful in assessing heart function, particularly in the case of:

Abnormalities in heart valves
Atrial fibrillation
Congenital heart disease
Fluid build-up around the heart
Heart disease or angina
Heart failure
Heart murmurs
Infected heart valves
Pulmonary hypertension
Identifying a blood clot after transient ischemic attack/stroke

What happens during the test?

A gel is applied to a small transducer probe (echo recorder) which is moved around your left chest wall area. A pulse of high-frequency sound is then passed through the skin and this sound is reflected from parts of the heart to create an image of the heart on the screen. The operator moves the probe around over the skin surface to get views from different angles. Sometimes pressure has to be applied to get good images.

Please allow 30-60 minutes for your visit. The test is painless and you do not need any special preparation before the test. You eat and drink normally before and after the test. Continue to take your usual medication.

You will not receive the results on the day of the test but the Consultant Cardiologist will report on these up to 7 working days normally.
