Microsuction uses a low-pressure vacuum to remove ear wax while the clinician looks into the ear under a microscope. It’s precise and doesn’t use water, which avoids the risks of infection and ear drum damage linked to water-based methods.

Traditional ear syringing flushes the ear with water. Microsuction is a gentler, safer and more effective alternative that is preferred, and often the only recommended method, by many healthcare providers.

Wax that becomes compacted in the ear canal can cause discomfort, blocked ears, muffled hearing and persistent ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

Some people naturally produce more wax than others. Wax can also become compacted if you frequently use cotton buds, earplugs or hearing aids.

You can use ear drops to soften the wax, for up to five days before your appointment. Avoid cotton buds, and make a note of your symptoms so your clinician understands what you’re experiencing.

Microsuction is suitable for most people, however if you have:

• a perforated or damaged ear drum
• an active ear infection
• have recently had ear surgery
• have grommets or a mastoid cavity
