What is Male Chest Reduction?

Simply put, male chest reduction is cosmetic breast surgery. At least 30% of adult men will be affected by gynecomastia (the overdevelopment of breast tissue) in their lifetime. More commonly referred to as 'man boobs', they occur due to an excessive buildup of tissue around the chest area, causing the appearance of breasts.

The excess tissue can vary in size, with some men finding it just occurs in one breast, which is completely normal. The goal of surgery is to remove excess breast tissue - either fatty tissue or glandular tissue - to leave men with a more defined, flatter and sculpted chest appearance.

Depending on the reasoning for your gynaecomastia surgery, you could also have some excess skin removed to enhance the chiselled appearance of your chest.

We have experience of delivering 5 star services to over 10,000 patients every year.

This is why our patients rate us Excellent on Trustpilot.

What Causes The Appearance of Gynaecomastia?

We understand that having definitive reasoning for any changes to your body can sometimes help you know what steps you have to take to reverse these changes - or at least attempt to.

Unfortunately, it can be hard to determine the specific cause of this medical condition - however, there may be some factors that could have influenced the growth of breast tissue.

What happens during Male chest reduction surgery?

We pride ourselves on offering a patient-first approach to all of our services at Pall Mall. It does not matter if it is your initial consultation, your surgery or a couple of years after your procedure, your wellbeing is our top priority.

By offering exceptional private cosmetic services, we can make sure you aren't on a long waiting list and have the chance to meet with our specialist consultants promptly.

We want to ensure you have all the information you need to feel confident in your surgical decision. So, whether you're looking for more information about male chest reduction or are ready to meet a surgeon, our expert team is here to help.

Consultation

At the consultation, your surgeon will ask you about your desired outcome, giving you a better idea of exactly what you want, the surgery itself and any risk that may be involved.

The surgeon will ask you about your medical history and examine your chest area to see if male chest reduction would be the right treatment plan for you. If it isn't, not to worry, our surgeons will likely recommend other cosmetic surgeries that may help you achieve your desired look.

We urge you to ask questions during your appointment so you can leave feeling confident and happy about your decision.

Pre-Operation

When it is close to your surgery date, we will ask you to come for a pre-op appointment at one of our clinics across the North West. During your appointment, one of our dedicated nurses will perform a series of health checks, usually:

  • Urine test
  • MRSA
  • Blood test

We understand that these tests may seem scary, but they are to give you peace of mind that there will be no complications further down the line and ensure you are fit and healthy enough for surgery.

Again, if you have any questions or queries our incredible team will be more than happy to help.

Surgery

Your male chest reduction surgery will take place at our private hospital in Newton-le-Willows, where you will be greeted by our staff.

You will be shown to your room and our state-of-the-art facilities guarantee you get the highest level of care and service. After a quick check-up, you will be taken to the theatre for surgery and wake up with a flatter, more defined chest.

Our friendly ward nurses will regularly check on you to ensure you are feeling okay throughout your time in our hospital.

Post-Surgery

More often than not, with this form of surgery you will be able to go home the same day. Of course, everyone's recovery time will be different, but we recommend avoiding your typical daily activities for a couple of weeks after surgery.

We will ask you to come in for follow-up appointments so that we can manage your progress and assess if you need additional pain relief medication.

Aftercare

Your wellbeing is our number-one priority - that is why we offer two years of aftercare so that we can be with you at every stage of your recovery.

Our support line is available 24/7. If you have any issues, please don't hesitate to contact our team.

Advantages of Gynecomastia Surgery

The before and after results of male chest reduction are extremely impressive, but trust us, there are even more benefits to a male breast reduction procedure than just looks. (Although, that is definitely an advantage!)

Your self-worth can be improved

Many people who suffer from gynaecomastia also battle depression and anxiety due to their appearance and insecurities. Most people don't even realise just how damaged their mental health and body image is until after the surgery.

By improving your self-worth, you may feel more confident about going and meeting new people, working out at the gym or other social activities that you previously haven't enjoyed or even tried due to your body image.

You deserve to feel great about yourself and surgery may be what it takes to put you back in control of your mental health and self beliefs.

Help you maintain weight

You may have gynaecomastia and not be overweight. However, some men find it difficult to maintain their weight due to the medical condition. This is because they:

  • Experience pain due to the excess tissue (which may make them want to be sedentary to reduce the amount of pain)
  • May be embarrassed to exercise in public
  • Be unmotivated to change their appearance as they believe it won't change anything

By removing the barrier and changing the way you appear, you may be motivated - or simply able - to move your body as a way of maintaining or reaching your ideal body weight.

Reduce bodily pain

Experiencing pain because of your chest area is not just for women. Men also can experience lower back pain due to excess chest tissue if they do not have the back muscles to support them. If you find you are in too much pain or too embarrassed to go to the gym and build your muscles to improve this, you will find yourself in a vicious cycle.

By opting for gynaecomastia surgery, you can alleviate any pain you experience so you can comfortably stand tall - completely full of confidence.

More traditionally masculine appearance

Although society has come a long way in how we believe men and women are 'supposed' to look - unfortunately, some people still have preconceived notions and cast judgement on others if they do not meet the typical standard of appearance. You may even do it to yourself!

It's understandable that you may feel negatively affected by this, especially in terms of your chest appearance. The good news is you do not have to suffer with this constant mental battle any longer.

It may seem scary, but male breast reduction surgery is a way you can achieve a more traditionally masculine look.

Freedom to wear more styles of clothing

Do you find yourself always reaching for that one top that covers how your chest looks? Find yourself hiding away in hoodies? Or always buy shirts and t-shirts that are several sizes too big?

With gynecomastia surgery, you can finally wear the  shirts you've always wanted to, but previously always convinced yourself they won't look right because of your chest. If you feel more confident, you'll look more confident and wear clothes that match the new you.

Long-lasting results

More often than not, the results from gynaecomastia surgery are thought to be permanent. However, everyone's genetics are different, so we can't promise forever.

If you eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight, it is believed that the fat cells that once caused an increased chest size should stay at bay, leaving you with a flat, defined chest for many years to come.

Would I be better off getting a liposuction procedure?

Here at Pall Mall, we offer a range of cosmetic procedures for men, including vaser liposuction. We understand why you may believe vaser liposuction may be the best solution to reduce your chest size - especially if you believe you have pseudogynecomastia.

This form of gynaecomastia is where the chest size has increased due to additional fatty tissue rather than true gynaecomastia, which is caused by the enlargement of breast tissue. Sometimes, patients have a combination of both types of gynaecomastia, which is completely normal.

Our experienced GMC registered surgeons have trained in the latest techniques and surgical procedures so that we can ensure you get the utmost level of care.

At your free consultation, our qualified cosmetic consultants will talk you through our range of cosmetic procedures and together you can choose the best type of surgery for you. That way you can feel confident in your decision and get to feeling like your best self sooner rather than later.

Feel confident in your body again

How much can you reduce my chest size by?

The overall aim of male chest reduction is to remove as much fatty tissue and, if necessary, other glandular tissue. That way you are left with a chest that makes you happy and boosts your confidence whenever you look in the mirror.

Naturally, this will look slightly different for everyone. During your free-of-charge consultation, your consultant will discuss what they believe will look best, or most natural, for you and the overall build of your body.

Our before and after results show that our surgeon's recommendations achieve a flatter, more traditionally masculine looking chest with as minimal scarring as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Our expert team are always hand to help, advise and arrange appointments with our specialist consultants.

When can I return to work after male breast reduction surgery?

This would depend on the nature of your job and how you are progressing with your recovery. It is common to require 1 week off work, but if you are an office worker, doing only light administrative tasks, you will be physically able to return much quicker than a person who has a more physical job. If you need to move/lift heavy items or have a very hands on job, it would be ideal to have longer for recovery period of 1-2 weeks off. It would be recommended to arrange a couple of weeks of lighter tasks after your procedure, as exertion can cause side-effects and reduce your recovery.

How long will I keep my bandages on after male chest reduction surgery?

The dressings used by the surgeon after your gynaecomastia operation will remain on usually during the first 1-2 weeks. The exact length of time will depend on how quickly your wounds heal, and whether your surgeon chooses to use dissolvable stitches or  removing these during your follow up appointments in clinic.

What can I wear after male chest reduction surgery?

For the first 1- 2 weeks after surgery you may be asked to wear an elasticated garment to provide support to your chest. This is required both during the day and overnight. It is important you have some support during the first 24 – 48 hours after surgery to help you at home. You must always have a chaperone (whether friend or family) to take you home when discharged.

When can you exercise after male chest reduction surgery?

You should avoid any strenuous physical activity, exertion through work or exercise during the first 2 – 3 weeks following surgery. This prevents any increased fluid accumulation and enables your body to focus upon healing faster.

When can you drive after male chest reduction surgery?

You can drive when you feel physically able to during your recovery. This is commonly around 1 – 2 weeks following surgery but is highly dependant on how fast you are recovering and regaining strength and suitable body control to be able to safely drive and meet the terms of your driving license.

How long does the operation for male chest reduction take?

Most surgeons will explain that a typical gynaecomastia procedure in theatre takes approx 120-150 minutes (around 2-3 hours). Although this can vary person to person. You will remain in hospital straight after surgery, with some patients being allowed to return home same day, and some may require 1x overnight stay. You will be given suitable advice when your theatre time is booked.

What causes gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia is a medical condition, the presence of excess breast tissue can occur for a number of reasons including weight loss, changes during puberty or a hormone imbalance that could cause increased levels of oestrogen and sometimes cause breast tissue to grow. If you have lost weight, surgery is a common solution to remove excess, saggy skin and tighten the appearance of your chest area.

Gynaecomastia is a common condition that affects men of all ages, from teenage boys to older men. It can affect men at any time in your life and therefore Male Breast Reduction Surgery is an option if you have this condition.

When is male chest reduction surgery not suitable?

Surgery is not for some men, especially when larger breasts are caused solely by excess fat from being overweight. Reshaping the male breast is not a weight loss solution, and your surgeon can advise you if a normal weight loss programme would be more suitable. This will reduce your risks without the need for surgery under general anaesthetic.

Why do I need to private for male chest reduction?

The NHS does not commonly carry out male breast reductions unless there is an associated and significant distress or pain. For this reason, many men choose to have the procedure done at a private healthcare clinic such as Pall Mall Cosmetics. There is no waiting list, and you do not need any referral to have an operation performed.

We can ensure your safety at our CQC (care quality commission) regulated hospital in Newton-le-Willows and city centre clinics in Manchester or Liverpool. Our surgeons mostly come from the NHS, so you get the same quality of surgery, but in a safe, clean and professional private clinical environment.

Our surgeons also strive for excellence, being members of BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) and BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic & Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgeons). A clear demonstration of our ability to meet the gold standard of care you would expect from an elite surgical hospital.
