What is split & tribal ear lobe surgery?

Split earlobe surgery is a simple procedure that can correct the damage caused by a piercing being pulled through the earlobe. Earlobe repair surgery is performed under local anaesthetic which usually takes around 15-20 minutes per ear. Your earlobes are instantly repaired and the downtime is minimal with lots of patients returning to work the next day.

Tribal earlobe surgery can correct and reduce the size of stretched earlobes that may have occurred due to heavy or plug/tunnel earrings. During a tribal earlobe repair a section of ear tissue is removed and the two loose ends are then stitched together. It is important to see someone who is experienced in tribal earlobe repair that can precisely recreate the curve of your earlobe to avoid any unnatural looking lumps or bumps. Our facial plastic surgeons and ENT specialists will discuss the procedure with you in detail at during a free consultation at one of our clinics in Manchester, Liverpool and Newton-Le-Willows.

We have experience of delivering 5 star services to over 10,000 patients every year.

This is why our patients rate us Excellent on Trustpilot.

What happens during split/tribal ear surgery?

From your first call or email, we’re here to look after you. Whether you’re still researching about how to have your split ear lobe repaired and would like more information, or you’re ready to meet a surgeon to see what results you can achieve, our team of patient co-ordinators are here to help.

If Split Tribal ear lobe surgery is something your interested in then you can have an appointment with our surgeon who will review your ear lobe/s and discuss how the operation would work as well as the results that you could expect. This free consultation will last between 20-45 minutes and you’ll be given the opportunity to ask the surgeon any questions.

At Pall Mall, we want to make sure every operation is a huge success for our patients and therefore in the build-up to surgery we will ask you come into the clinic so we can have a pre-procedure check-up.

At this, you will be asked to take an MRSA test and have blood/urine tests to ensure you are fit and healthy for the procedure.

Pictures of your ears will be taken so we have a medical record of them before surgery. Your nurse will be there to support you throughout the assessment.

The day of surgery shouldn’t be a worry for you as you’ll arrive at our outstanding private hospital in Newton-le-Willows where your nurse will greet you.

The surgeon will then check on your general health and ask you to sign the last consent form before you are anaesthetised with local by the surgeon. The operation takes around 15 minutes and which point you will be allowed to leave the hospital to rest at home.

We like to keep an update on our patients recovery, therefore we ask that you come into the clinic 3 times over the next 6 weeks so that we can check your progress.

If you have any concerns about your ear lobes then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team either over the 24/7 contact number with our nurses or by coming into the clinic.

The Nurse and surgeons will be on hand to address any concerns and make sure you are happy with the results.

What happens during split & tribal ear Lobe surgery?

Earlobe repair surgery is a straightforward procedure performed in a treatment room. The surgery falls under two categories:

Split Earlobe surgery corrects earlobes that have been split, either from wearing heavy earrings or if an earring has been forcefully pulled from the piercing.

Tribal Earlobe (or Stretched Earlobe) surgery corrects stretched earlobes and can reduce the earlobe size. You may have tribal (stretched) earlobes if you have worn “plug” / “tunnel” earrings or generally wear heavy earrings.

Many people come to Pall Mall Cosmetics to correct the tribal appearance as a requirement for their career – typical examples include people who wish to join the special forces.

Other people choose to come to Pall Mall Cosmetics because they no longer wear the heavy/plug/tunnel earrings and wish for their earlobes revert back to their previous size & shape.

What are the benefits of ear lobe surgery?
  • After the procedure, you will be left with earlobes that are the normal shape and size
  • The ears can be re-pierced if you desire
  • The procedure is straightforward and done in a treatment room, without the need for general anaesthesia and surgery
What does ear lobe surgery involve?

Both split and tribal earlobe procedures are quick and straightforward. They are both performed in a treatment room, not a theatre. It uses local anaesthesia to numb the targeted area.

The split earlobe treatment firstly removes the edges of the torn lobe and then using sutures the earlobe is repaired to the normal shape and size. The procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes.

The tribal earlobe treatment is again performed in a treatment room and involves the surgeon using carefully placed sutures to close the earlobe hole. Depending on the size of the hole, the surgeon may need to remove some of the excess skin.

You can go home straight away after both procedures and return to work the same or next day.

Will I have bruising or swelling after ear lobe repair surgery?

Bruising and swelling will disappear within a week or less. If you bruise easily, then it may take slightly longer for the bruising and swelling to fade. There shouldn’t be any pain and the bruising can be easily hidden using concealer or moisturiser if you wish to do so.

What type of anaesthesia will I need for ear lobe repair surgery?

The procedure only requires small amounts of local anaesthesia. The procedure takes place in a clinic environment, not in a theatre. It is extremely rare for general anaesthesia or sedation to be chosen for these procedures.

How long does ear lobe repair surgery take?

The procedure (split or tribal) is fairly quick and you can expect the whole treatment to take less than 30 minutes. If you require both ears correcting, it may take up to 45-60 minutes. Additional time may be required by the surgeon if there is significant trauma to repair or if there is a complexity to the earlobe correction – this will be fully discussed with you during your initial, free of charge consultation.

Can I drive home after ear lobe repair surgery?

Yes. The procedure only uses local anaesthesia so it’s perfectly safe to drive home after surgery.

It is very rare to require sedation or general anaesthesia – but if this is required, the surgeon and pre-operative nurse will advise you on when you can drive again.

Because local anaesthesia is often used with this surgery, driving home is allowed. Although uncommon, if a sedative is requested, patients are not able to drive themselves home after the surgery.

Will I have scars after split ear lobe or tribal ear lobe surgery?

There will be a small scar where the sutures are placed. However, the scar is very small and over time should completely fade!

When can I return to work after ear lobe surgery?

Most people return to work the same or next day!

Will I be awake during ear lobe surgery?

It’s common with most cases to use local anaesthesia (the lobe area numbed), so patients will be awake. Sedation is rarely needed with split ear repair surgery. A general anaesthetic will not be required.
