What are hay fever treatments?

Types of hay fever treatment

The specific treatment recommended will depend on the severity of your hay fever and other individual factors.

Antihistamines

Prescription-strength antihistamines can be taken in tablet or liquid form, and can help alleviate symptoms of hay fever that over-the-counter treatments have not been able to.

Steroid nasal sprays

This type of treatment can help reduce inflammation in the nose and sinuses, a common symptom of hay fever.

Eye drops

Liquid eye drops can provide relief if you suffer from itchy or watery eyes due to hay fever.

Montelukast

These tablets (brand name: Singulair) can be prescribed to people who suffer from asthma and experience allergic rhinitis caused by seasonal allergies.

Oral steroids

Our GPs may prescribe oral steroids to help relieve symptoms of hay fever if other treatments haven’t been effective.

When to treat Hay Fever?

It's advisable to start treatment before the season starts in late March for maximum results. Tree pollen season starts in late March and peaks in early June, whilst grass pollen which is the more common allergy, peaks in mid May and lasts until July.

Treatment can begin when the symptoms have already started as well but before the peak period to get the maximum impact.
