Traditional Liposuction vs Vaser Liposuction

Both procedures remove unwanted fat deposits and reshape the body -  but they work differently, and the results can vary.

Traditional liposuction uses a cannula to manually break up and suction fat from targeted areas. It's a well-established technique that delivers effective results, particularly for larger volumes of fat removal.
Vaser liposuction uses ultrasound technology to first liquefy fat cells before they're removed, allowing for more precise sculpting with less disruption to surrounding tissue. This results in a smoother contour, reduced recovery time, and is particularly suited to areas requiring fine definition.

During your free consultation, your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate technique based on your goals, the areas being treated, and your individual anatomy.

What happens during liposuction surgery?

From your first call or email, we’re here to look after you. Whether you’re still researching about liposuction and would like more information, or you’re ready to meet a surgeon to see what results you can achieve, our team of patient co-ordinators are here to help.

Consultation

During the consultation with your surgeon, you will hold a discussion on which areas concern you as well as the what sort of re-shape you’d like the doctor to create during the operation.

This appointment will last between 20-45 minutes and is the perfect opportunity for you to ask questions about post-surgery, aftercare or risks.

Pre-Operation

The pre-op assessment is vital to your Liposuction treatment and has a few different parts. From a medical perspective, the nurse or surgeon will examine your overall health to assess whether you are suitable for the surgery. This will come in the form of an MRSA test, for example blood or urine tests.

Your body will also be photographed for medical purposes but also so we can compare in post-surgery the difference between the ‘Before’ and ‘After’.

The nurse will then be able to inform you about how best to prepare for the surgery in the days leading up to it and what to expect at our private hospital. The team can then address any questions so you have all the information you need.

Surgery

You can expect a friendly atmosphere as you arrive at our private hospital in Newton-le-Willows. Your room will have an en-suite and is extremely comfortable meaning you can relax before the surgeon arrives to run your through the surgery procedure, the timeline and the aftercare you can expect at the hospital.

A quick check on your health will be taken and there will be a final form to sign for consent. At this point, you will head into surgery and have a general anaesthetic to sedate you before the one to three-hour operation takes place. The timing of the op depends on the agreed amount of fat that will be removed.

Post-Surgery

After surgery we will ask you to visit us up to 3 times, at 1, 2 and 6 weeks after surgery, this allows us to run some check-ups in the clinic . The nurse and surgeon will study your progress to make sure you’re on track and take some pictures to demonstrate the changes in your body.

Aftercare

We have an industry leading aftercare program. Consequently, you are free to come in after your procedure as often as you like or you can contact our amazing nurses on a 24/7 call line. You will be advised to reframe any strenuous exercise in the weeks following surgery and it is imperative you follow your surgeon’s recovery plan to allow you to achieve the expected results by 6-9 months.

What happens during liposuction surgery?

You can expect a friendly atmosphere as you arrive at our private hospital in Newton-le-Willows. Your room will have an en-suite and is extremely comfortable meaning you can have relax before the surgeon arrives to run your through the surgery, the timeline and the aftercare you can expect at the hospital.

At this point, you will head into surgery and have a general anaesthetic to sedate you before the one to three-hour operation takes place. The timing of the op depends on the agreed amount of fat that will be removed.

Does liposuction get rid of cellulite?

It does not get rid of cellulite or cause any new cellulite to develop. If you already have cellulite in the area that you want fat removing, it is worth noting that the improved contours or smoother lines may occasionally result in the cellulite becoming more visible.

How will I feel after liposuction surgery?

It is common to experience some swelling and bruising for the weeks following the surgery. Fluid retention is also common, but most of these symptoms will settle quickly as your body recovers. All types of surgery have the potential risk of infection, bleeding and scarring.

Why do I need to go private for liposuction surgery?

The NHS does not commonly carry out liposuction procedures, rarely in lipoedema cases, either unless there is an associated and significant distress or pain. For this reason, many women and men choose to have the liposuction procedure done at a private healthcare clinic such as Pall Mall Cosmetics. There is no waiting list, and you do not need any referral to have an operation performed.

We can ensure your safety at our CQC (care quality commission) regulated hospital in Newton-le-Willows and city centre clinics in Manchester or Liverpool. Our surgeons mostly come from the NHS, so you get the same quality of surgery, but in a safe, clean and private clinical environment.

Our surgeons also strive for excellence, being members of BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) and BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic & Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgeons). A clear demonstration of our ability to meet the gold standard of care you would expect from an elite surgical hospital.

How much fat can be removed during liposuction?

The amount of fat removed varies depending on the areas being treated and your individual circumstances. As a general guide, it is considered safe to remove up to five litres of fat in a single session. Your surgeon will discuss realistic expectations with you during your consultation and will always prioritise your safety over the volume removed. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure - the goal is a refined, natural-looking result rather than maximum extraction.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

The ideal candidate for liposuction is someone who is in good general health, close to their target weight, and has specific areas of stubborn fat that have not responded to diet and exercise. It is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for weight loss. A BMI within an acceptable range will typically be required before surgery can be performed. Your surgeon will assess your suitability during your free consultation and will advise whether liposuction, Vaser liposuction, or an alternative procedure is the right option for you.

Will the fat come back after liposuction?

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the treated areas. Once those cells are gone, they cannot return. However, if you gain significant weight following surgery, remaining fat cells in other areas of the body can expand. Maintaining a stable weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise will help preserve your results long term. Most patients find that the visual improvement from surgery provides strong motivation to maintain their new shape.

What is the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck?

Liposuction and a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) are different procedures that address different concerns, though they are sometimes combined. Liposuction removes localised fat deposits but does not address loose or excess skin. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal muscles, making it more suitable for patients who have experienced significant weight loss or changes following pregnancy. If your concern is primarily stubborn fat with good skin elasticity, liposuction may be sufficient. If loose skin is also a factor, your surgeon may recommend a tummy tuck or a combination of both procedures.
