Why we include blood tests in your menopause screen

For most women over 45, menopause is diagnosed from symptoms and changes to periods rather than a single blood test, because hormone levels can fluctuate from day to day. So why do we include bloods? Because they give your consultant a fuller picture and help make sure your care is right for you.

Ruling out other causes:

Tiredness, low mood, weight changes and brain fog can also be caused by thyroid problems. Checking your TSH and FT4 makes sure nothing is being missed or mistaken for menopause.

Confirming early menopause:

If you're under 45, hormone tests such as FSH can help confirm whether you're going through early menopause or premature ovarian insufficiency. This matters because earlier menopause can affect long-term bone and heart health, and treatment is usually recommended.

Guiding your treatment:

Knowing your oestradiol and hormone levels gives your consultant useful information when discussing options like HRT, and a point of comparison if your treatment needs adjusting later.

Signs and Symptoms of Menopause:

Hot flashes and night sweats Most common menopause symptom caused by hormonal changes that affect the body’s temperature control.
Irregular or skipped periods (before they stop completely) Common sign of menopause as hormonal changes disrupt the menstrual cycle
Trouble sleeping or waking at night A frequent menopause symptom often linked to hormonal changes and night sweats.
Vaginal dryness or discomfort during intimacy Caused by declining estrogen levels
Mood swings, irritability, or anxiety Occur due to fluctuating hormone levels affecting emotional balance
Memory or concentration difficulties Hormonal changes affect your cognitive function and focus
Fatigue A combination of hormonal changes, sleep disturbance and reduced energy levels
