What can I expect from Revision Rhinoplasty?

Revision Rhinoplasty is a complex procedure but our team of surgeons, nurses, and patient coordinators are here to look after you from the moment you get in touch with us. You can find out more about what’s involved in each stage of the surgery below - for any other questions, please get in touch with us.

Free surgeon consultation

The first step is to meet your surgeon to talk about your goals for this surgery and what has led to you contacting us. Your surgeon will examine your nose and ask you some questions to understand what results you were hoping for from the original procedure and why you’re looking for a revision.

This is also your opportunity to ask any questions about the surgery to feel fully at ease before you proceed. We understand that you will have already been through a challenging period following your initial surgery, and we’ll do all we can to support you through this next stage.

Pre-operation

Once you’re happy to proceed with the revision surgery, we’ll invite you to a pre-op assessment to check that you’re physically healthy and fit enough to undergo surgery. This will include blood and urine tests, and may involve a test for MRSA. We’ll also take some photographs of your nose for our medical records and so we can compare how it looked before and after the surgery.

Surgery

Your surgery will take place at our private hospital in Newton-le-Willows. On the day, you will be shown to your own en suite room and will be visited by your surgeon prior to the surgery to check that you’re happy to proceed. Before surgery, you’ll need to remove any jewellery, piercings, and makeup, and change into a medical gown. When you’re ready, our nurses will take you into theatre for the procedure.

The length of the surgery will depend on the extent of the revisions needed, but on average, you can expect to be in theatre for 3-4 hours. You will be sedated with a general anaesthetic throughout.

Post-surgery

Following your surgery, you’ll be taken back to your hospital room to recover from the anaesthetic, and in most cases you’ll be discharged from hospital the same day. You’ll be unable to drive, so you will need to arrange transport home from hospital, ideally with a friend or family member.

At home, you’ll need to keep your head elevated and avoid touching or putting pressure on your nose. You’ll have significant swelling and bruising around your nose, eyes, and cheeks, but you should be able to manage any pain with medication. Our patient experience team will give you all the information you need to aid your recovery when you’re discharged.

Aftercare

Your first post-op appointment will be one week after your surgery, during which the splint will be removed. You’ll also have a follow-up appointment at six weeks, when our surgeon will check on your progress. We encourage you to ask any questions or raise any concerns during these appointments. You will also be given the number for our 24/7 aftercare line in case you want to speak to our team outside of those consultations.

Common questions about Revision Rhinoplasty

Our team of specialists is on hand to answer any questions you may have about Revision Rhinoplasty. Please contact us if there is anything you want to know, and in the meantime you can find answers to some of the most common questions about the procedure below.

How is Revision Rhinoplasty different from other types of nose surgery?

Like other forms of nose surgery, the aim of Revision Rhinoplasty is to alter the size and shape of a patient’s nose. The difference is that this type of surgery is specifically for people who have already undergone Rhinoplasty but are not satisfied with the results.

How long do you have to wait after surgery before having Revision Rhinoplasty?

It can take up to 6-12 months for the swelling to completely go down after Rhinoplasty, so we encourage patients to wait at least that long before deciding to have Revision Rhinoplasty.

How many times can you have Revision Rhinoplasty?

There is no limit to the number of times you can undergo Rhinoplasty surgery, but it does get more complex each time, as the surgeon will need to consider what changes have already been made and how the structure of the nose has been affected.

We encourage all patients to discuss their goals for the surgery and any dissatisfaction from previous surgeries fully and honestly with our surgeons in advance. That way, we can give you the best possible care and ensure that you don’t need to go through the process again unnecessarily.

How long does Revision Rhinoplasty take?

Each surgery depends on an individual’s circumstances, the extent of the changes they’re looking for and how previous surgeries have changed the structure and appearance of their nose. On average, we’d expect you to be in theatre for at least 3-4 hours, but the procedure may take longer if more extensive changes are required.

Do you have to have an associated medical problem to have this type of surgery?

No, our surgeons can conduct corrective Rhinoplasty for medical or cosmetic reasons. If you’ve had a nose job and aren’t happy with how it looks, you can contact us for a no obligation consultation even if you’re not suffering from any medical issues as a result of the surgery.

Is the recovery time longer for Revision Rhinoplasty?

Yes, the overall recovery time for Revision Rhinoplasty may be longer than it was for your primary surgery. Existing scar tissue may slow down the healing process, and the correction of previous surgeries may cause more extensive swelling. Each individual is different, but in some cases the final results of secondary Rhinoplasty may take 18 months to two years to be fully apparent.

Does it matter where I had my previous Rhinoplasty surgery?

No, we accept patients regardless of which provider carried out their primary Rhinoplasty. Our surgeons will get to know you during your pre-op consultations and will be able to advise the best course of action based on your circumstances and what you want from the revision.

What is the recovery like?

Following your surgery, our nurses will be on hand at any time if you need advice and will check on your progress during your post-op consultations.

It’s crucial that you give yourself time to recover at home following any Rhinoplasty procedure. You will experience some pain and swelling in the days immediately following your surgery, and it’s important that you follow your aftercare instructions carefully to help ensure a smooth recovery.
