Your fertility blood test appointment: What to expect

Your fertility blood test appointment will be quick and easy, so try not to worry beforehand. If you struggle with having blood tests, then you can always bring a friend or family member along to hold your hand. Here is what you can expect from your appointment:

1. Book your appointment

First thing’s first - Choose to book a consultation with our fertility clinicians or opt for a fertility blood test directly. If you're unsure of which test is best we offer a complimentary 5 minute GP to help guide you to the best test suited to your needs.

2. Timing the Test

For women, some fertility hormones must be tested at specific points in the menstrual cycle:

Day 2–5 of your cycle: FSH, LH and oestradiol

Around 7 days after ovulation: Progesterone (to confirm ovulation)

Any time in the cycle: AMH, thyroid function and prolactin

Fertility blood tests for men can usually be done at any time.

3. The Blood Sample

Once you’ve reached the right point in your cycle, you will be invited to one of our CQC-registered clinics, either in Manchester or Newton-le-Willows. Here, a small blood sample will be taken. The appointment is quick, usually lasting only a few minutes.

4. Laboratory Analysis

The sample is sent to the lab, where hormone levels are measured. In the meantime, you’ll be sent home afterwards to await a call from our fertility clinicians.

5. Callback from your fertility clinician

Within a couple of days, your fertility clinician will call you with your results. If you want her to call you back when your partner is nearby, then please ask her to do so. Your comfort is so important to us.

Fertility blood test results: What to expect

Your fertility blood test results will, of course, depend on the tests you opted to have done. For women, your results could tell you how well your ovaries are functioning, how many eggs you’ve got, or how your fertility cycle is progressing throughout the month. For men, test results will show sperm production/count and hormonal balance. If you’ve got any questions before or during your blood tests, be sure to ask your fertility clinician.

What are the next steps after having blood tests for fertility issues?

Once you’ve had your fertility blood tests done, you'll receive an email with the findings.
