What can a consultant help with?

Approximately one person is diagnosed with breast cancer every ten minutes in the UK*. Many cases of breast cancer can be treated successfully if they are detected early enough. Breast cancer screening (mammogram)  is one of the main ways to detect cancer early and at Pall Mall Medical, our experts offer a range of screening options and treatment options if cancer is diagnosed.

Breast Concerns - Pathway

The below pathway may be helpful to you so that you can determine which option is the best for you.

Symptoms to check for
  • lump on or around the breast, upper chest of armpit — it may not be visible but it can be felt.
  • The breast area may be “lumpy” or the breast tissue may be unusually thick.
  • Unusual pain either in the breast or armpit.
  • Skin texture — this could be “dimpling” or “puckering” or the breast
  • The breast may change in shape or size, I.e. One breast may become larger / lower than the other breast.
  • Change in colour — the breast may be red or inflamed.
  • Change in appearance or direction of the nipple — one nipple may become inverted when it normally points out.
  • Nipple discharge from one or both breasts
  • Rash or crusting around the breast or surrounding areas.
Symptomatic Patients (symptoms or family history)

If you have any of the above symptoms or if you have a medical history of breast cancer, you should follow the below pathway:

  1. Appointment with Specialist Breast Consultant
  2. Mammogram (if over 35 years of age)
  3. Breast Ultrasound
  4. Breast MRI (if necessary)
  5. Biopsy

Asymptomatic Patients - Screening (No symptoms)

If you do not have any symptoms or a family history of breast cancer, and you are looking for Breast Screening, you should follow the pathway below:

  1. Mammogram - if over 35 years of age OR Breast Ultrasound if under 35 years
  2. Appointment with Specialist Breast Consultant

Alternately, book an appointment at our One Stop Breast Clinic

Breast Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds of the breasts are used to provide information which may not be picked up on a mammogram or to double check abnormal results from a mammogram. A breast ultrasound can also be used to diagnose and monitor non-cancerous cysts.

Genetic breast cancer test

Pall Mall Medical can offer the BRCA 1 & 2 genetic breast cancer test. More information is available here: BRCA1 and BRCA2 Genetic Breast Cancer Risk Test.

Breast cancer diagnosis

A combination of the above tests, a biopsy and yours and your family’s medical history will help a consultant to diagnose breast cancer. If you are diagnosed with breast cancer then your consultant will discuss your options with you.

It’s easy to get an appointment online or over the phone.
