Basal Cell Carcinoma Treatment & Removal

What is Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is another name for a rodent ulcer and is a type of skin cancer. It is the most common type of all skin cancers in the UK. It is often caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun or from sunbeds and can occur anywhere on the body. The most common areas affected on the body include the face, neck and ears as these are frequently exposed to UV light. They can also develop where burns, scars or ulcers have damaged the skin.

How is it treated?

Rodent ulcers are best treated by surgical removal under local anaesthetic, especially for cosmetic reasons when they are on the face, head and neck. Removing the rodent ulcer is the best way to ensure the condition has the least chance of reoccurring.

Under local anaesthetic, the ulcer and its cuff of normal tissue is removed and put in a container to be sent to the pathologist for analysis. The pathologists check to see if the skin lesion is indeed a basal cell carcinoma and that it is completely removed from the body. There is a rapid turnaround time for these checks and results will be available in the shortest time possible.

How can Pall Mall Medical help?

A consultation with one of our experienced Consultant Dermatologists is required to assess the rodent ulcer and whether removal can be performed within the same appointment. This may involve review under a dermoscopy.  If your rodent ulcer is removed, it is required to perform a histopathology laboratory test on the skin cancer removed to ensure the ulcer is benign and to ensure the lesion is fully excised. This is part of your total fee.

The Consultant or Nurse will inform you of your results from the laboratory when available.

Pall Mall Medical is able to perform this procedure at our clinics in Manchester city centreLiverpool city centre and at our private diagnostic and surgical hospital in Newton-le-Willows.
