Erectile Dysfunction
What causes erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction is a condition which commonly affects men between the ages of 40-70 and it’s estimated that 50% of all men in this age group will experience this condition at least once. The condition is also known as impotence and although it can be embarrassing for men suffering from the condition, it is highly treatable.
There are a number of causes of erectile dysfunction including physical conditions, such as hormone imbalances and conditions which affect the blood, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Certain medication can also cause the condition as well as psychological problems such as depression, stress, and anxiety. In the case of psychological issues, erectile dysfunction can create a vicious cycle where the condition itself begins to cause stress and anxiety, therefore making the situation worse. In some cases, erectile dysfunction can cause relationship problems, which again, can increase the feeling of stress and anxiety around the condition.
When does erectile dysfunction need medical treatment?
Although not every case of erectile dysfunction requires medical treatment, it is always a good idea to speak to a GP in case the condition indicates a more serious underlying problem, such as heart disease, especially if you’ve been suffering from the condition for a long time.
Once a GP or consultant urologist has diagnosed what is causing the condition, you will be given a suitable treatment plan which may involve lifestyle changes, medication changes or new medication.
