What is a Brain MRI scan?

MRI scans of the head and brain are among the most frequently performed imaging tests. This type of scan is a highly effective diagnostic tool, capable of detecting injuries, abnormalities, or other conditions affecting the brain and skull. People may be advised to undergo a head or brain MRI for a variety of reasons, such as changes in behavior, persistent headaches, or vision problems.

Having a brain MRI can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re waiting for answers about your health. While the procedure itself is routine and painless, the uncertainty can be stressful. Understanding what to expect can ease your anxiety and our expert radiologists are here to guide you every step of the way.

By providing fast, accurate results, we help you get the answers you need sooner, giving you peace of mind and confidence in your care.

Why choose a Brain MRI scan?

A brain MRI is a safe, non-invasive scan that gives doctors a detailed look at your brain. It’s often recommended to:

  • Detect abnormalities like tumors or cysts

  • Investigate symptoms such as headaches, vision changes, or seizures

  • Diagnose neurological conditions like stroke or multiple sclerosis

  • Monitor existing brain conditions and treatment progress

  • Check for injuries after trauma

A brain MRI helps ensure accurate diagnosis and effective care.

You'll be informed how long the scan will take when booking your appointment.

Is an MRI scan painful?

As an MRI scan is a non-invasive procedure, no anaesthesia or pain relief is required. However, if you have claustrophobia or are particularly nervous, you can request some sedation. Please let us know your preference ahead of your procedure date.

Why should I choose a private Brain MRI scan?

Choosing a private MRI scan means faster access to appointments, quick results, and direct support from experienced radiologists. It’s ideal if you need answers sooner for peace of mind or want a second opinion without delays.

Is a brain MRI scan safe?

Yes, MRI scans are very safe. They do not use radiation, and side effects are extremely rare. If contrast dye is needed, our team will assess your medical history to ensure it’s suitable for you.

Can I get additional areas of the body scanned?

Yes. If you would like to get tests for other areas of the body that aren't included, please mention this to your specialist at one of your consultations.

How should I prepare for my Brain MRI scan?

You can eat and drink as normal unless advised otherwise. You’ll be asked to remove metal objects like jewellery, watches, or hairpins before the scan.
