Breast cancer is still the most common cancer in the UK. 1 in 8 women in the UK have a lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. 11,600 women died from breast cancer in 2012 in the UK, that’s around 32 every day. Early diagnosis means much better survival rates - more than 90% of women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest stage survive for at least five years. This figure is drastically reduced to around 15% for those women who are sadly diagnosed late with advanced disease.

Frequently Asked Questions.
Our expert team are always hand to help, advise and arrange appointments with our specialist consultants.
How often should you have breast screening?
Opinions vary.
The American College of Radiology recommends screening mammography for women every year, beginning at age 40.
Some European countries including France, Spain and Ireland offer to screen every 2 years from age 50.
The NHS provides free breast screening every three years for all women aged 50 and over. The rolling programme means not every woman receives an invitation as soon as she is 50. But she will receive her first invitation before her 53rd birthday
At Pall Mall Medical we recommend screening every 2 years for women aged over 40 and annually for those at higher risk. Our consultants specialising in breast cancer are always happy to advise on the best options for individual cases.
Who is at risk of breast cancer?
An estimated 27% of female breast cancers in the UK are linked to lifestyle factors including being overweight, smoking and alcohol. Oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapies containing oestrogen can also increase the risk.
Family history and age are important considerations. Genetic factors including BRCA gene mutations have been recently identified as important indicators of higher risk.
Pall Mall Medical offers health screens to identify levels of risk to help you decide if you should book a mammogram. BRCA testing is also available at Pall Mall Medical.
What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is a specialist type of X-ray commonly used for breast cancer screening.
Pall Mall Medical has chosen the latest Hologic Selenia® Dimensions® 3D Digital Mammography equipment as part of our strategy to offer patients the latest diagnostic technology.
For women worried about a breast problem or booking for screening mammography, Hologic’s state-of-the-art 3D equipment was selected to give lower levels of radiation yet the most reliable and accurate results.
It only takes around 20 minutes to perform, and so it is easy to fit in with your busy schedule.
Who can have a Mammogram and how do I book?
Making an appointment is easy by phone, email or in person.
If you are over 35 with no breast problems and you want a Mammogram for Breast Screening, then our private GPs offer an initial free of charge telephone consultation.
If you have symptoms, a family history of breast cancer or are under 35 years of age, we recommend an initial consultation with one of our specialist consultants in breast surgery. Our consultants offer appointments at Manchester, Liverpool and Newton-le-Willows – you choose the one most convenient for you.
If appropriate you will then be referred directly to our radiology department to book an appointment to best suit you.
The mammogram is done at our state of the art imaging department in Newton-le-Willows, ideally located between Manchester and Liverpool and easily accessible by road and rail. Free onsite parking is provided for your convenience.
Results are usually available within 7 days of the test. For your reassurance and peace of mind, we insist on two radiologists looking at the images before the final report is given.
Why should I have a mammogram?
Many women choose to have regular screening with us simply because they want peace of mind. Others choose Pall Mall Medical because they prefer to have a Mammogram outside an NHS setting.
Mammograms don’t prevent breast cancer, but they can save lives by allowing a diagnosis to be made as early as possible. The procedure is safe as Pall Mall Medical only uses modern-day digital mammography which involves a minimum amount of radiation – even less than a standard chest X-ray.
Experiencing symptoms of breast cancer?
If you are worried or suspicious about breast cancer, are symptomatic of breast disease, or you have found a lump, we strongly advise you to consult with one of our expert breast surgeons who will decide whether a Mammogram or Ultrasound is the most appropriate test. It may be necessary to take an ultrasound guided biopsy with a fine needle before proceeding to Mammogram.

Yes – Pall Mall Medical is registered with most health insurance companies. Simply contact your insurer or broker to inform them which one of our sites in Manchester, Liverpool or Newton-le-Willows suits you best.
If you have symptoms, then in many cases you don’t even need to see your NHS GP. Our GPs at Pall Mall Medical are available Monday-Saturday by phone and in person to make the referral you need urgently.
