Endometriosis Test

Endometriosis tests: How is endometriosis diagnosed in the UK?

In the UK, endometriosis tests are usually done by the NHS and in private clinics. It’s worth noting that the NHS has lengthy wait times, and currently three-quarters of a million of UK women are waiting to see a gynaecologist.

We know how frustrating this can be, especially because there is a chance that your endometriosis will get worse while you wait. This is why many women choose to have an endometriosis test in a private clinic.

At Pall Mall Medical, we help to diagnose endometriosis via a quick and easy saliva test - the Ziwig Endotest. Instead of surgery or internal examinations, the Ziwig Endotest uses your saliva sample to detect specific biomarkers associated with endometriosis. Where endometriosis usually takes years to diagnose, the Ziwig Endotest provides answers within a matter of days.

Can the Ziwig Endotest replace laparoscopy?

No, the Ziwig Endotest does not replace laparoscopy. Usually, the Ziwig Endotest is used to detect endometriosis, whereas laparoscopy confirms the diagnosis and allows your surgeon to remove the tissue-like legions.

Why does early endometriosis testing matter?

If left untreated, endometriosis can spread to other parts of your body, and potentially worsen. Stage 4 endometriosis is a very serious condition which can lead to infertility and damage to the surrounding organs.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is an extremely painful condition where cells (similar to the tissue-like lining of the womb) grow in different parts of the female organ - including on the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The condition comes with lots of hard-to-manage symptoms, and women often describe the pain as far worse than that of a period. It’s important to know that endometriosis has no cure, but if you are diagnosed early enough, you can stop it spreading and causing serious problems.

What are the signs and symptoms of endometriosis?

Endometriosis sounds like a simple condition, but in reality, it is one of the toughest conditions for a woman to live with. If you have endometriosis or signs of endometriosis, you may be experiencing the following:

Pelvic Pain That Feels Constant: Ongoing or recurring pain in the pelvis, lower abdomen, or back, not limited to periods.
Heavy or Irregular Bleeding: Missing periods or spotting between cycles and experiencing very heavy periods when you do get a period., & large clots
Vomiting or Migraines During Your Period: Nausea, vomiting, or severe headaches that occur on or around your period that can disrupt daily life.
Severe Ovulation or Period Pain: Intense, often debilitating cramps that disrupt your daily life.
Pain During or After Sex: Deep, persistent or even excruciating pain linked to sexual intercourse is a very common symptom.
Problems Conceiving: Endometriosis can make it harder to conceive. This can be due to inflammation, scar tissue blocking fallopian tubes, or affecting the ovaries.

Endometriosis doesn’t look the same for everybody; but it’s important to detect the condition before it spreads and manifests. It’s particularly important to catch stage 4 endometriosis because it can cause infertility and if left untreated, can cause damage to your surrounding organs.

If you have symptoms of endometriosis, then we feel for you. It’s not an easy condition to live with. What our women's health patients say

Your Ziwig Endotest results: What do they mean?

Once your results come back from the lab, your clinician will call you with the results. There are 3 types of results: positive, negative and inconclusive.

Here is what the results mean:

A positive result means that it’s highly likely you have endometriosis and that there is a presence of it in your body. Further investigations like laparoscopy may be needed. Some women choose to opt for medical management instead.

A negative result means it’s unlikely that endometriosis is present, but you should not completely rule it out.

An inconclusion result means that you may have to repeat testing

Booking your test is the first big step, and you can overcome that today. Once you’ve had your test, our gynae team will help you with next steps, including medications referrals, and ways to look after yourself at home.

Ziwig Endotest vs laparoscopy for endometriosis diagnosis

When diagnosing endometriosis, the Ziwig Endotest cannot replace a laparoscopy. In fact, both tests work together to create a clearer diagnosis.

Your first step is often the Ziwig Endotest — a pain-free, non-invasive saliva test that can help detect endometriosis at an earlier stage.

If needed, you will then have a laparoscopy (surgical biopsy) to confirm your endometriosis diagnosis. Your gynae specialist can also remove the tissue-like legions at the same time as taking the biopsy. Try not to worry - you’ll be under full anaesthetic and you won’t feel a thing.
