About Dr Nasir Mirza
Dr Mirza completed his BSc in neuroscience in 2003 and undergraduate medical training in 2005 from King’s College London. He also travelled to the United States to train with world-leading neurologists in Johns Hopkins University. His post-graduate training was in Guy’s and St Thomas' Hospitals and King’s College Hospital in London, and in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the Walton Centre in Liverpool. He was awarded a PhD in the complex genomics of epilepsy in 2014 from the University of Liverpool. He was made a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in 2018.
He runs a busy outpatient and inpatient neurology practice at the Walton Centre in Liverpool – the only specialist neurosciences NHS hospital trust in the UK dedicated solely to providing comprehensive advanced neurosciences services. He also sees patients with a wide range of chronic and acute neurological presentations in clinic, in A&E and on the wards in Southport General Hospital – a busy acute general hospital. His private practice is in Lancashire, and patients come to see him from across the country – on-site and on-line.
Dr Mirza has a special interest in epilepsy. He has advanced skills in the assessment and diagnosis of fits and faints, honed through years of specialist training and intensive experience. He has spent ~20 years studying and researching antiepileptic drugs. He holds a PhD specifically focused on severe epilepsy, giving him deep insight into the most challenging cases. He has one of the largest epilepsy practices in one of the largest epilepsy centres in Europe. He regularly assesses and assists patients with difficult-to-treat epilepsies referred by other neurologists from his hospital, the wider region, and distant cities. He co-leads the regional adolescent epilepsy clinic, where he sees young people with often complex severe genetic and syndromic epilepsies, referred from hospitals throughout the region.
As a researcher and educator, Dr Mirza has performed cutting-edge research, and has numerous publications in prestigious academic journals, such as Nature Genetics. He has written book chapters that are used by other doctors and specialists worldwide.
Dr Mirza is GMC-recognised Medical Educator. In this role, he delivers teaching and training in clinical neurology to future doctors and neurologists.
