Arthrogram (MRI Joint Scan)

Book your appointment

What is an arthrogram?

An MRI arthrogram is a medical imaging procedure that is used to evaluate the condition of joints.  Pictures of a joint are taken after it has been injected with a contrast material which affects the local magnetic field within the joint, allowing a radiologist to see the soft tissue structure of a joint.

Arthrographic images can help your consultant to pinpoint the cause of your joint pain by highlighting changes in the structure and function of a joint. Once fully evaluated, your consultant can determine the best course of treatment for your joint, including arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), open surgery or replacing the joint.

The procedure is most often used to identify abnormalities within the following joints:

  • Shoulder
  • Wrist
  • Hip
  • Knee
  • Ankle
  • Elbow

These scans are available at short notice and our consultants, including orthopaedic and joint specialists, are available for follow-up appointments should you wish to discuss the results with a specialist.
