The Hysteroscopy screening is an advanced technique that uses a narrow telescope with a light and camera at the end to examine the inside of the womb, passed through the vagina. Around a quarter of women are affected by heavy bleeding and 1 in 20 women aged between 30-49 in the UK need to visit their GP due to heavy menstrual bleeding. A hysteroscopy is now recommended under NICE guidelines as the first-line test for women experiencing these issues, instead of having a pelvic ultrasound scan which gives a less accurate diagnosis. The screening should help ensure women with underlying conditions such as fibroids and polyps, endometrial diseases or other gynaecological conditions are more effectively diagnosed. It can also be used to help find the cause of infertility.
