What is an MRI scan?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners are used to generate detailed images of tissue and bones within the body. This is done using magnetic and radio waves, meaning that there is no exposure to radiation like in other types of scan. The scan usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on the area being examined.

Why should you have an MRI scan?

MRI scans can generate images at any angle from the body making them an essential diagnostic tool. Some of the common uses include:

  • Examining the spinal cord to identify back problems and trapped nerves
  • Detecting the presence of tumours in the brain and other parts of the body
  • Looking at the changes in the brain associated with strokes and dementia
  • Showing the heart and lungs, although not shown in great detail, other scans are more suitable
  • Examining the thickness of muscles and abnormal growths to check for ligament damage or muscle damage.
  • Sports persons wanting to see injury damage.
  • Used for imaging the breast (alternative to mammograms - read more about our consultant breast specialists)

Our brain and body scans image multiple parts of the body for detailed diagnosis of particular symptoms and conditions.

Brain and body MRI scans

A brain and body MRI scan can generate images of a number of internal areas such as the spinal cord, brain, abdomen, pelvis, and arteries, detecting the presence of potential issues or tissue damage.

For details of what is covered and what isn't included in a brain and body MRI scan, read our brain & body MRI information and consent form, find out what's included and what isn't in a brain and body MRI scan.

MRI scans at Pall Mall Medical are available on a self-referral basis, meaning you don’t need to get a referral from your NHS GP first. We are also able to offer you a free of charge consultation with a private GP if the radiographer requires clinical details before performing the scan.

Our scan reports are turned around quickly, and when completed we’ll send the report to a doctor of your choice; you may like to book a consultation with one of our specialists to discuss your report following from your scan. You can find out more about our cardiology, neurology and spinal specialists in our consultants section.

For full details, and if you wish to go ahead with one of these scans, please fill out and complete our brain & body MRI consent form.
