What is a PSA test?
The PSA test measures the level of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by your prostate gland, which helps keep semen liquid. In healthy individuals, the amount of PSA found in your bloodstream should be relatively low; however, if the amount of PSA increases significantly or if it does not remain at a healthy level, it could indicate signs of prostate cancer.
It’s also important to note that there are other conditions besides prostate cancer which may cause elevated levels of PSA in your system - such as prostatitis or benign enlargement of the prostate - so don’t jump to conclusions if you get a high reading!

Who needs a PSA test?
A common misconception about PSA tests is that they should only be taken by men over 50 years old. While older men are at higher risk for developing prostate cancer than younger men, all men should take regular PSA tests regardless of age.
There’s also no such thing as “too young” when it comes to getting tested - if you experience any symptoms associated with prostate problems, don’t wait until you hit 50 before getting tested!
A PSA blood test plays a vital role in the early detection and management of prostate cancer, which is essential for improving outcomes and overall prostate health of patients.
Common symptoms of prostate cancer may include:
- Needing to urinate more often
- Difficulty starting to urinate
- Feeling your bladder has not emptied fully
- Blood in urine or semen
- Persistent back or pelvic pain
- Unexplained weight loss
- Frequent fatigue/low energy
