It's important to take the time to talk about sexual health—including the importance of safe sex and knowing the symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases. Being aware of these topics can help us have healthier, happier sexual relationships.
Safe Sex
Having safe sex is an essential part of our sexual health. It not only helps protect us from unwanted pregnancy but also keeps us safe from contracting various sexually transmitted infections (STIs). There are a few different ways to practise safe sex including using condoms and getting tested regularly for STIs, and getting vaccinated against HPV. All of these steps can help protect us from getting an infection that could have serious consequences.
Symptoms of STDs
It is important to be aware of the symptoms associated with STDs so that you can identify them early on and receive treatment as soon as possible. Some common symptoms include burning or itching around your genitals, sores in the genital area, swollen lymph nodes in your groin area, pain when urinating or having intercourse, flu-like symptoms such as fever and chills, abnormal vaginal discharge, and abdominal pain.
Treatment Options
If you do test positive for an STD there are several treatment options available depending on which type you have contracted. For bacterial STDs like chlamydia or gonorrhoea antibiotics are typically prescribed to clear up the infection while viral STDs like herpes or HIV require antiviral medications such as acyclovir or Truvada. Treatment for other types of STDs may vary depending on their severity so it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider if you suspect that you may have contracted one.
If you experience any of these symptoms it is best to make an appointment with your doctor right away so they can diagnose any potential issues quickly.
STI | Symptoms | Treatment |
Chlamydia |
| Chlamydia can usually be treated easily with antibiotics. You may be given a course of doxycycline to take for a week or azithromycin to take once a day for 3 days. |
HIV |
| HIV is treated with antiretroviral medicines, which work by stopping the virus from replicating in the body. This allows the immune system to repair itself and prevent further damage |
Hepatitis B |
| Hepatitis B usually clears up on its own without treatment. You may be offered medicine to help with the symptoms, such as painkillers or medicines to stop you from feeling sick. Your GP will refer you to see a liver specialist who will check how well your liver is working. |
Hepatitis C |
| Hepatitis C is a virus that can infect the liver. If left untreated, it can sometimes cause serious and potentially life-threatening damage to the liver over many years. However, with modern treatments, it's easily possible to cure the infection. |
Gonorrhoea |
| Gonorrhoea is usually treated with a single antibiotic injection (usually in the buttocks or thigh). With effective treatment, most of your symptoms should improve within a few days. |
Syphilis |
| Antibiotics cure syphilis. They're usually given by a single injection or a short course of tablets. |
