Visiting a gynaecologist for the first time?

It's completely normal to feel nervous about your first gynaecologist appointment. We've all been there. As an important step in your healthcare journey, we want to provide you with the best possible experience.

Our team of medical experts not only have a wealth of knowledge in gynaecology and obstetrics but know that care, support, and compassion play a key part in helping you with your diagnosis.

Smear tests look for abnormal cells in the cervix, which can eventually lead to cancer. These cells don’t often show up in younger women. 21 is the recommended age for routine cervical smears and pelvic exams. Unless you are sexually active or have vaginal discharge or other complaints, you will not need an internal pelvic exam.

If you have any concerns at all, please let us know. We are more than happy to answer any questions or queries you might have about your appointment. As well as diagnosing and treating your condition, your gynaecologist's role is to make you feel as safe and comfortable as possible throughout the experience.

What does a gynaecologist do?

Gynaecologists are specialists in women's sexual and reproductive health.

They can diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), endometriosis, pelvic pain, abnormal smears, issues with your period, ovarian cysts, and more.

What is the difference between an obstetrician and a gynaecologist?

While gynaecology encompasses a wide range of women's health issues, obstetrics focuses more specifically on maternal health. This involves managing specific conditions during pregnancy, labour, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Receiving quality healthcare throughout this period is crucial for maintaining a high level of wellbeing, for women and their babies.

Every pregnancy is unique, and our team will support you with whatever you need, whenever you need it.

Mr Sachchidananda Maiti is our senior consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician. Having worked in the UK and abroad, Mr Maiti has years of experience in the field and specialises in a variety of gynaecological conditions.

How often should you visit the gynaecologist?

You don't need to be suffering from a serious symptom to visit a gynaecologist. In fact, regular wellness exams are vital to female reproductive health. Although hundreds of women go in for their gynaecology checkups every year, it can often be seen as an unnecessary expense and many actively avoid appointments, especially when it comes to that dreaded smear test.

We believe visiting the gynaecologist should be an essential part of a woman's life. As standard practice, we would recommend visiting the gynaecologist for a checkup annually, although this can vary depending on your age and health.

Below are just a few benefits of receiving regular checkups:

  • Increased awareness about your sexual and reproductive health
  • Detection of any conditions at the early stages so they can be treated most effectively
  • Early diagnosis of gynaecological cancer

We understand that private healthcare may not seem feasible for everyone. At Pall Mall, our aim is to make it an accessible option and we offer a range of flexible medical finance options to ease the pressure.

10 reasons to see a gynaecologist

There's a multitude of reasons to see a gynaecologist, ranging from a routine checkup to surgical treatment.

Some conditions can be incredibly painful and prevent you from carrying out your everyday activities. Others can be as simple as a change in smell or a feeling of dryness. Whether you are experiencing extreme symptoms or a small amount of discomfort, it's important to recognise when to book an appointment.

Cervical screening

A cervical screening test (also known as a smear test) is used to detect early changes to cervical cells which, if left untreated, could develop into cervical cancer in the future. We are able to perform cervical screenings outside of the NHS programme, allowing you to have a smear test sooner. The NHS only starts to screen women from the age of 25.

If needed, our Gynaecologist is able to quickly arrange and perform a Colposcopy procedure for you – which is a straightforward outpatient procedure to examine your cervix in more detail. This is typically recommended if a smear test has shown there is a problem with the cells in your cervix.

Contraception

Our experts can advise on the full range of contraception options, whether you are looking to change contraception, have recently had a baby, require emergency contraception or would just like some general advice on preventing pregnancy.

Common contraception we're able to advise and act on include:

  • Depo-Provera Injection
  • IUCD Coil (T-Safe Copper Coil)
  • IUCD Coil (Hormonal/Mirena)
  • Contraceptive Implant (Nexplanon)

We can also provide advice on contraceptive tablets / medication.

If you’re looking for something more long-term, we’re able to offer sterilisation procedures too.

All contraception planning is dynamic and reversible and we’re here to discuss the most suitable plan for you – from removing a coil or implant, changing your contraception plan or performing sterilisation reversal.

Fibroids

Fibroids are benign growths which form in the womb lining, they are very common and don’t always cause symptoms. If you have symptoms including pain during intercourse, bloating or heavy periods then these could be symptoms of fibroids.

General gynaecology

If you have noticed anything unusual which you are worried about or if you just want to review your gynaecological health, our consultants can answer any questions, perform appropriate tests and give you tailored advice.

Infertility

Infertility can be extremely challenging, particularly if you have been trying for a family for a long time. On the NHS, couples usually have to wait at least a year before being referred to a specialist. Seeking private help means you can be seen straight away, something which is particularly important if you are trying for a baby in your late thirties or early forties.

Our Consultant Gynaecologists are able to discuss and assess any possible fertility concerns and challenges you may be having. We’re able to arrange any necessary blood tests and scans, and we’re also able to provide more advanced diagnostics within our own state-of-the-hospital, including:

  • Diagnostic laparoscopy and dye test
  • Hysterosalpingo contrast echo sonography (hyCosy)
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)
Labiaplasty procedures

Many women who are self-conscious about the size of their labia or who experience discomfort choose to have a labiaplasty. Pall Mall Medical’s cosmetic surgery specialists can advise patients on what’s involved in the procedure and the expected outcome.

Menopause

Although every woman goes through the menopause, it can be a very physically and emotionally demanding time. Our experts can create a personalised plan to help you cope with the effects of going through the menopause to make this huge change as manageable and as comfortable as possible for you.

Menstrual disorders

Our experts can diagnose the cause of and provide treatment for a range of menstrual disorders including irregular periods, heavy periods or non-existent periods.

Pelvic pain

Sudden or prolonged pain in the pelvic area can occur for a number of reasons but is often the result of a gynaecological issue such as a burst or twisted ovarian cyst, endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease.

Sterilisation and sterilisation reversal

Sterilisation (permanent contraception by tying or blocking the fallopian tubes) and the procedure reversal are usually done through a laparoscopy (keyhole surgery). Sterilisation reversal procedures are rarely available in the NHS.

Speedy solutions with a private gynaecologist

At Pall Mall, we have the capacity to address a variety of gynaecological concerns. Whether that's a general gynaecology consultation, infertility treatment, birth control, or expert guidance for menopause management, we are here to support you.

Whatever your symptoms or desired outcome, we offer a wide range of treatments and solutions with our private gynaecologist service.

Women's health screening

Many women aren't aware that they have an underlying health condition or battle on with symptoms in the hope that they will go away with time.

We provide a screening service that is specifically tailored to women's health. Following the appointment, your gynaecologist will talk you through the results, give you an overview of your general health and wellbeing, and address any specific concerns and follow-up advice.

Private hysteroscopy screening

If you have abnormally heavy periods or are experiencing gynaecological issues such as a concerning change in your vaginal discharge, you may need a hysteroscopy screen.

Unfortunately, it can take a long time for women suffering from unexplained symptoms to receive an appointment and even longer to be diagnosed on the NHS. At Pall Mall, we offer industry-leading techniques to give you a quicker diagnosis and treatment plan.

During your private hysteroscopy screening, your consultant will examine the inside of your uterus. The advanced technology used can help to more accurately identify underlying conditions, including endometriosis, fibroids, and polyps.

Private ovarian cancer screening

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancers among women and largely affects postmenopausal women. In many cases, it can go undetected as the early signs are often difficult to spot. With regular screening, you can identify the illness before it reaches an advanced stage, allowing for more effective treatment.

With our ovarian cancer screening service, we can help to detect the markers that signal the potential presence of cancer using a blood test. We offer two different types of tests, CA125 and HE4. Your consultant will advise which is most suitable for you.

When you choose Pall Mall, you will receive quality, end-to-end care that goes beyond the screening process. If any abnormalities are present, you will be provided with a personalised treatment plan and will be supported throughout the process.

Cervical cancer screening and smears

Regular smear tests are the first step in detecting and treating cervical cancer. We can perform private smear tests for women from the age of 18 and above, as well as for human papillomavirus (HPV). With the NHS, you will only receive a cervical smear after the initial HPV, if it has indicated concerning symptoms. We can offer both tests within the same appointment.

With Pall Mall, you will receive rapid results and support with further treatment, if required.

Hysterosalpingogram

If you are struggling to conceive or sustain a pregnancy, it is important to understand that infertility is simply a symptom. There can be a variety of underlying causes and being able to identify the specific obstacle is the first step in your journey.

One of the most effective tests is a hysterosalpingogram, which uses an X-ray to detect any infections or blockages in your fallopian tubes. It can also show whether the inside of your uterus is a normal shape and size and help to uncover any issues in that area.

Hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography

With an extensive range of advanced gynaecological services available, we are able to provide you with a personalised solution that meets all your needs.

As well as a hysterosalpingogram, we can also perform a hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography to investigate the uterus and fallopian tubes. This is a zero-radiation ultrasound procedure that generally causes less discomfort to the patient.

Female sterilisation

Contraception is available in a variety of different forms, including the permanent prevention method of female sterilisation. The procedure will not affect your hormone levels and you will still have regular periods.

Making the decision to receive the operation can be daunting. We at Pall Mall are here to support you through the entire process, from the initial consultation to high-quality aftercare.

This is a standard laparoscopy procedure and will be performed by an experienced consultant gynaecologist in our specialist-built surgical centre. To ensure the best possible recovery, you will be provided with a private room and en-suite.

Labiaplasty procedures

As part of our separate cosmetic service, we can offer a labiaplasty procedure. This will be performed by an experienced cosmetic surgeon who specialises in the field.

At Pall Mall, we are passionate about helping women to feel confident in their own skin.

For women who experience discomfort from certain clothing or are self-conscious about the shape or size of their labia, a labiaplasty procedure involves shortening or reshaping the vaginal lips. You may have come across the term ‘designer vagina’, but many women are unaware that a labiaplasty is a common surgical procedure that can transform their relationship with their body. This option is rarely available on the NHS.

This is an incredibly personal surgery and our cosmetic surgery specialists are on hand to answer any questions and advise you on the best approach to achieve your desired outcome.
