What do blood tests for tiredness check?

Blood tests for tiredness help to identify possible causes of exhaustion by checking key vitamins, hormones, and markers within the body. Feeling constantly tired all the time – regardless of how often you rest and the quality of your sleep – may be a sign of an underlying condition or nutritional deficiency. Fatigue blood tests can pick up on these.

Common things checked in blood tests for tiredness include:

Complete Blood Count (CBC) | From £69

A complete blood count, or full blood count, checks your red and white blood cells for infection or anaemia. Both infections and anaemia can cause extreme tiredness.

Iron Studies & Ferritin | From £123

An iron studies & ferritin test checks levels within your body. Low iron, specifically ferritin, can cause anaemia. Anaemia is very common, and its symptoms include fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath.

Vitamin B12 & Folate | From £45

A vitamin B12 & folate test checks for levels within your body. Having low B12 levels is relatively common, and its symptoms include tiredness, brain fog, and dizziness.

Thyroid Function Tests | From £101

TFTs check the hormones within your thyroid to see if they are underactive, overactive, or normal. Underactive thyroid causes extreme fatigue.

Liver and Kidney Function Tests (LFTs) | From £78

LFTs measure enzymes and proteins in the blood to see if the liver and kidneys are working properly. Dysfunction of these organs can lead to severe fatigue.

Blood Glucose & HbA1c | From £41

Blood glucose tests check for high or low levels, both of which can indicate diabetes. Tiredness is a symptom of diabetes.

Inflammatory Markers (CRP, ESR)

Inflammatory markers (especially C-reactive protein) are checked to see if any infection or inflammation is present. Both of those can cause chronic tiredness.

Hormone Tests (optional) | From £178

Certain hormone levels can cause extreme tiredness. These are checked on an optional basis.

Why am I always tired? Common causes of fatigue

When you’re constantly tired, everyday life can start to feel more difficult. Work becomes less manageable, and you find yourself turning down plans with friends more often. The good news is that once we know what is causing your fatigue, you can get started on treatment.

Here are common causes of fatigue and tiredness

  • Low iron & ferritin (anaemia)
  • Low vitamin B12 & folate
  • Thyroid problems
  • Poor liver or kidney function
  • Infection or inflammation
  • Low or high blood glucose (diabetes)

All of these conditions can be identified via a quick and easy set of blood tests. For more information, book your free consultation with our expert team.

What is iron deficiency anaemia?

Anaemia is a common (but exhausting!) condition where your body has fewer red blood cells than normal, reducing its ability to transport oxygen to nearby tissues. If you have anaemia, you’ll likely have iron deficiency anaemia. This has many causes, including:

  • A lack of iron in your diet (especially if you’re vegetarian or vegan) - can be picked up on a blood test
  • A lack of vitamin B12 - can be picked up on a blood test
  • Blood loss
  • A chronic condition (like kidney disease) - can be picked up on a blood test
  • An inherited condition (like sickle cell anaemia)

People with anaemia usually take iron & ferritin supplements or have iron infusions. After your blood tests, your doctor will advise you of a treatment plan for anaemia.

What are the symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia?

The symptoms of iron-deficiency anaemia are sometimes hard to detect because they are similar to a normal state of tiredness.

Lack of energy
Feeling out of breath
Heart palpitations
Noticeable headaches
Pale skin
Difficulty focusing

If you have iron deficiency anaemia, it is important that it is detected early. Without wanting to scare you, we need to advise you that living with untreated iron deficiency anaemia can lead to serious health complications. If you notice any anaemia symptoms in yourself and would like to get tested, get in touch with our expert team today.

When to see a doctor about constant tiredness

If constant tiredness is interfering with your daily life, or if you have symptoms of a condition like anaemia or thyroid dysfunction, then it’s time to see a specialist doctor.

At Pall Mall Medical, we provide complimentary 5-minute phone calls with a GP to any patient interested in having blood tests for tiredness. When you’re on the phone, you can ask as many questions as you like about the blood tests and what they will uncover (no question is a silly one!).

Whether you go to a private clinic like ours or have blood tests on the NHS, all we’ll say is – don't delay. Some conditions, like iron deficiency anaemia, can get worse when left untreated.

Blood tests for tiredness and weight gain: is there a link?

Yes, there is a link between blood tests for tiredness and weight gain! Certain conditions that cause tiredness can also cause an unexplained, rapid onset of weight gain. Furthermore, weight gain can be linked to hormonal imbalances and vitamin deficiencies, which we check for when we carry out our blood tests for tiredness.

Your appointment: What happens during a blood test for tiredness?

Your fatigue blood test appointment will be quick and easy, so try not to worry beforehand. If you struggle with having blood tests, then you are more than welcome to bring a friend or family member along with you. Here is what you can expect from your appointment:

1. Book your appointment

First things first – book your appointment with one of our doctors.

2. The blood sample

Next, you will be invited to one of our CQC-registered clinics, either in Manchester or Newton-le-Willows. Here, a small blood sample will be taken. The appointment is quick, usually lasting only a few minutes.

3. Laboratory Analysis

The sample is sent to the lab, where hormone and vitamin levels are measured. In the meantime, you’ll be sent home afterwards to await the results - depending on which blood test results come back with 2-7 working days..

4. Clinician-reviewed results

Within a couple of days, you will receive your secure digital results; every report is personally reviewed and annotated by a UK-qualified clinician to provide you with clear, actionable insights.

5. Expert follow-up

From just £50, you can book back in for a GP appointment to discuss your findings in detail. This appointment will be with the medical expert who made notes on your blood tests. By doing this, you can plan the next steps in your health journey.

Understanding your blood test results

Your fatigue blood test results will depend on the tests you opted to have done. If you had the thyroid test done, then the results will be based on thyroid function. If you had iron studies & ferritin done, then your results will tell you whether you’re low in iron or not. Whichever tests you had done, your doctor will explain the test and their results in detail on the phone. There’s always time for questions, too!

What you can do right now

While waiting for your blood test day to arrive, you can calm yourself by reading up on the procedure and what happens on the day. You can call your healthcare provider with any questions you have, too. Just know that, whatever the results, there are treatment options out there for you.

How much do private blood tests for tiredness cost?

The cost of blood tests for tiredness varies, depending on which tests you opt for, where you have the blood done and the provider you choose.
