What happens during a Breast Ultrasound?

Preperation: Avoid applying lotions, powders, or deodorants to your breasts on the day of the appointment, as these can interfere with the scan.
Positioning: The sonographer will ask you to lie in a position that allows them easy access to the area being scanned.
Gel application: The sonographer applies a water-based gel to improve sound wave transmission and image clarity.
Scanning process: A handheld device called a transducer is gently moved over the skin, emitting sound waves that create images of the inside of your body on a monitor.
Results review: After the scan, the images are reviewed by a specialist, who will share the results with you and talk you through any next steps.

What is a Breast Ultrasound?

Ultrasound imaging (sonography) used during a Breast Ultrasound is a painless & non-invasive technique used to take pictures of your breast's internal tissues, which a specialist can then interpret in order to help diagnose any lumps or abnormalities you have been experiencing.

No x-rays or any type of ionising radiation is involved and for this reason, it is considered very safe.

How to check your boobs this Breast Cancer Awareness Month

To check your boobs, start by looking in the mirror with your arms at your sides, raised, and on your hips for any changes in shape, skin, or nipples. Then, in the shower or lying down, use the pads of your three middle fingers in circular motions with light to firm pressure to feel the whole breast, from collarbone to abdomen and across to the armpit.

Get to know what is normal for your breasts so you can spot changes quickly and try to routinely check your breasts every month.
