Considering breast augmentation (BA)? You have two distinct paths to enhancement: traditional breast implants for a significant, predictable size increase, or fat transfer for a subtle, all-natural result with the added benefit of body contouring.
Understanding the differences between these options is the most crucial first step in achieving your aesthetic goals.
Breast Implants
This is the "traditional" method. A pocket is created for the implant. This can be over the muscle, under the muscle, or partially over and partially under the muscle (deep plane). Alternatively, the new Preservé technique creates a pocket inside the breast tissue.
Breast implants are made from medical-grade silicone gel or sterile saline. Sizes can range from 125cc up to 500cc. Surgery typically takes around 60 minutes.
Fat Transfer (Autologous Fat Grafting)
This is often called "Natural Breast Augmentation." It is a two-part, "2-in-1" procedure. First, we perform liposuction to harvest fat from a donor site (like your abdomen, thighs, or "love handles"). That fat is then purified and carefully injected into the breast tissue.
In a fat transfer, not all the fat we inject survives. Usually, about 60–70% of the fat successfully establishes a blood supply and stays forever. The rest is naturally absorbed by your body in the first few months. For this reason, breasts are often "over-filled" slightly during surgery, and it may take 3–6 months to see your final, permanent size.
Breast Implants or Fat Transfer: Which One is Right for You?
It's always best to discuss your options with an experienced breast surgeon that can advise on the best option for your goals. As a general guide:
Choose Implants if:
You want a dramatic change (e.g., going from an A cup to a C or D).
You want upper-pole fullness (that "push-up" look).
You are very lean and don't have enough "donor fat" for liposuction.
You want a highly predictable result in a single session.
Choose Fat Transfer if:
You want a subtle, natural enhancement or want to fill in "gaps" or asymmetry.
You want to avoid having a "foreign object" in your body.
You have areas of stubborn fat you'd like to slim down anyway.
- You prioritise having virtually no scars.
Breast implants vs fat transfer breast augmentation: a comparison
Outcome | Breast Implants | Fat Transfer |
Size Increase | Predictable & significant (any size). | Subtle (usually 0.5 to 1 cup size). |
Shape/Projection | Can provide high projection and "lift." | Adds volume but does not provide "structure" or lift. |
Feel | Very natural (silicone), but can feel like a device. | Feels exactly like your own natural breast. |
Dual Benefit | None (only affects breasts). | Body contouring at the liposuction site. |
Longevity | Lasts 10–20 years (usually requires replacement). | Permanent (once the fat "takes" after 3 months). |
Scarring | One 3–5cm scar (usually in the crease). | Tiny "pinprick" scars from the injection needle. |
