Periods… for some, they arrive like clockwork, while for others they can be irregular, heavy, light or completely unpredictable. If your cycle changes in timing, duration or flow, from month to month, you may be experiencing irregular periods. While this can sometimes be a normal response to hormonal changes, it may also be a sign of an underlying health condition that’s worth exploring.

Irregular Periods: What’s Normal, What’s Not and When to Seek Help
What causes irregular periods
There are many potential factors behind irregular periods, ranging from everyday lifestyle influences to broader health considerations. Stress, changes in exercise routines, weight fluctuations and conditions such as hormonal imbalances can all play a role.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is one of the most common hormonal conditions affecting women and can disrupt regular ovulation, often leading to irregular or missed periods. It can also cause a range of other symptoms, including excess facial or body hair, persistent acne and difficulty conceiving. Some women may also notice weight gain or thinning hair on the scalp.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is commonly associated with painful, heavy, or disruptive periods, although symptoms can vary from person to person. While it may sometimes be linked with irregular cycles, it is more often recognised through ongoing period pain, pelvic discomfort, or pain during sex or bowel movements, particularly around menstruation.
Because symptoms can overlap with other conditions, diagnosis is not always straightforward. If your periods feel increasingly painful, unpredictable, or different from your normal pattern, it’s important to seek medical advice and not dismiss the changes

Thyroid Disorders (Underactive or Overactive)
Your thyroid helps regulate hormones. If it’s underactive, periods may be heavier and less frequent; if overactive, they may be lighter or stop altogether. Look out for fatigue, weight changes, or sensitivity to temperature.
Stress
Ongoing stress can interfere with hormone production, leading to delayed or missed periods. It often comes with sleep issues, anxiety, or low energy.
Excessive Exercise
Intense exercise - especially when combined with not eating enough - can suppress ovulation and lead to irregular or missed periods. Fatigue and unintended weight loss can also be warning signs.
Lifestyle Factors
Changes in weight, restrictive diets, or certain medications can all affect your cycle by disrupting hormone balance.

When your concerns are dismissed without answers
For many women, these symptoms are too easily brushed off. Concerns about irregular periods are often attributed to “hormones”, stress, or anxiety without deeper investigation. This can leave you feeling dismissed and unsure whether what you’re experiencing is being taken seriously.
Persistent irregularities shouldn’t be ignored. You know your body best and if something feels off, trust that instinct - it’s reason enough to seek further answers.
Our specialist women’s health consultants are experienced in supporting women who come to us for second opinions after feeling dismissed or not fully heard by their GP.
