After years of ignoring symptoms she thought were nothing to worry about, Alison was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer at 60. Now cancer-free, she is sharing her story to encourage others to take changes in their health seriously.

Alison’s story: Overcoming stage four Bowel Cancer
Alison Aspinall never imagined that persistent symptoms she had ignored for years would lead to a life-changing diagnosis - stage four bowel cancer at the age of 60. Now cancer-free, she is sharing her journey to mark Bowel Cancer Awareness month and to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease.
Bowel cancer symptoms and early detection
Bowel cancer is the UK's second deadliest cancer, claiming nearly 17,000 lives each year. However, early detection can significantly improve survival rates. Early detection of bowel cancer significantly improves survival rates. According to Bowel Cancer UK, when diagnosed at the earliest stage (stage 1), more than 9 in 10 (93%) people with bowel cancer will survive their disease for five years or more. However, if diagnosed at the latest stage (stage 4), the five-year survival rate drops to just 11%.
Medical Director and private GP at Pall Mall Medical, Dr Tang, said: “Most cases of bowel cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage which unfortunately means that the only treatment options are usually surgery and chemotherapy. However, if caught early, bowel cancer can be cured. There are advanced tests available, such as our ColoAlert Bowel Cancer Test, that can detect the early stages of bowel and colon cancer, meaning it can be caught before it’s too late.”
Alison's journey from symptoms to diagnosis
Speaking about her experience Alison noted that she regretted leaving her symptoms for so long without consulting with an expert, she said: “Once you get the diagnosis, you then think, I wish I'd have come sooner.”
