Urgent warning issued to blokes after it’s revealed how often you should change your boxers
Although experts say you can wear your boxers for two days, you could pick up a fungal infection
Lazy blokes have been handed a lifeline as experts confirmed you CAN wear your boxers for two days in a row.
Skin specialists reportedly say there is no increase in the risk of infection or health issues if you wear the same underwear for a couple of days. It however seems looser underwear - such as boxer shorts - are the best for re-using.
medic says it "isn't ideal" to reuse your underwear. Dr Chun Tang, a GP and medical director at Pall Mall Medical, based in the North West, told the Daily Star: “While wearing underwear for multiple days isn’t ideal, breathable cotton boxers can be worn for two days if proper hygiene practices are maintained."
“Choosing breathable fabrics helps reduce moisture and odour.
“Showering daily, applying deodorant, and changing into fresh, clean underwear before bedtime can minimise bacterial growth and maintain freshness.
“However, it's crucial to emphasise that regularly changing and washing underwear is essential for optimal hygiene and to prevent potential health issues.
“So, it’s generally advisable that men don’t wear any type of underwear for two or more consecutive days, as this practice can lead to hygiene issues and potential health risks.
“Certain materials and styles may pose more concerns due to their tendency to trap moisture and promote bacterial growth, too.
“Underwear made from synthetic materials like polyester or nylon tends to trap moisture, for example, increasing the risk of bacterial overgrowth and unpleasant odours.
“Briefs and other tight-fitting underwear may restrict airflow, creating a warm and damp environment that encourages the growth of bacteria and fungus.
“Wearing underwear that has not fully dried, or has been previously worn allows bacteria to thrive, potentially leading to skin irritation and infections.
“Underwear with worn-out elastic, holes, or fraying fabric may not provide adequate protection and could lead to chafing or skin irritation.
“Therefore, changing underwear daily, selecting breathable materials like cotton, and maintaining good personal hygiene are essential practices to minimise the risk of infections, irritation, and other health issues.”
“Just to add, I would not advise women to do the, same, however.
“Wearing the same underwear for consecutive days poses health risks for women due to the accumulation of bacteria and sweat around the genital area.
“This environment provides a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, potentially leading to infections like thrush or urinary tract infections.
“Changing underwear daily helps maintain proper hygiene, reduces the risk of irritation, and supports overall vaginal health by promoting a clean and dry environment.”
It is not all good news for males though as they can suffer from the fungal infection known as “jock itch” if they do not change. Skincare specialist Sarah Roberts, said: "Men’s boxers, although touching the skin less frequently than women's underwear, do not escape these hazards – particularly when worn repeatedly.”
